My Winding Wheel Lyrics

well night time let her through
yeah, i'm talking to you
wanna see her
precious little thing
with eyes that dance around
without their clothes

so buy a pretty dress
wear it out tonight
for anyone you think
could outdo me
oh, better still
be my winding wheel

'cause i feel just like a map
without a single place to go of interest
and i'm further north and south
if i could shut my mouth
she'd probably like this

so buy a pretty dress
wear it out tonight
for all the boys you think
could outdo me
oh, better still
be my winding wheel
be my winding wheel

well the children laugh and sing
a song that ushers in her driving rain
and i'm standing in the station
like some old record waiting on a train

so buy a pretty dress
wear it out tonight
for anyone you think
could outdo me
oh, better still
be my winding wheel
be my winding wheel
be my winding wheel

I always thought he said, "I'm further north THAN south". A little commentary on how he doesn't actually fit into the country scene, and an admission that, yes, this song is about you: "if I could shut my mouth, she'd probably like this. Basically, if she didn't know he wrote this song, she'd dig it.

But my favorite line HAS to be "better still..."

"Yeah I'm talking to you" seems to be addressing the person she is with but he is telling him he wants her. At "nighttime" she is free to let go without her current man stopping her, probably dancing, being free etc.

"With eyes that dance around without their clothes" her eyes are naked, he can see how she really feels about him, she keeps looking at him and he is confident he has her in his sights "So buy a pretty dress/Wear it out tonight/For anyone you think could out do me."

he is a map that need places of interest added. he needs her to spice him up, make him come alive. "And I'm further north than south" suggests hes doesnt feel like he belongs where he is, comparing where he is to where he belongs.

"If I could shut my mouth she'd probably like this" wants him to stop talking and just dance and let it flow. my first thought for winding wheel is a cog in a machine, it powers or aids the machine (him).

"Well the children laugh and sing a song that ushers in her driving rain" the children singing along spurs on her energy/passion to dance. "And I'm standing in the station like some old record waiting on a train" hes waiting for her to 'play' him again like a record, simply waiting on her to bring him alive

i kinda get the feeling he's thinking of this girl that he has this thing for but she's trying to find someone better than him

I think it's a marriage proposal. The part that goes, "so buy a pretty dress/wear it out tonight/for all the boys you think/could outdo me..." sounds as if she is trying to make him jealous. And she is. But it also sounds as if he KNOWS that this relationship is IT. He's not worried that she will find someone who will give her more than the relationship they already have.

The part that goes, "well the children laugh and sing/a song that ushers in her driving rain..." seals it as a marriage proposal. Rain...represents the...

Legend has it that when Ryan met Bob Dylan for the first time, Dylan asked him: "That song, 'My Winding Wheel'... what's it about? What the f**k is a winding wheel"? :D
