If Only Lyrics
If it gets you down well then I'll take it
If it gets you up well I don't want it
It let you down so broken hearted
If it gets you down well then I want it
If only we're nothing at all
So blow our mind and make it lazy
Those long long days with no escaping
I hold the wheel to let it go
Don't wanna stop, don't wanna know
If it gets you down, well just don't blame me
If only we're nothing at all
If it gets you up well I don't want it
It let you down so broken hearted
If it gets you down well then I want it
Those long long days with no escaping
I hold the wheel to let it go
Don't wanna stop, don't wanna know
If it gets you down, well just don't blame me

this song is not about drugs. its situated in the aftermath of a heavily undesired outcome (if only if only...) the singer has no need for happiness or structure and decides to enhance this feeling of despair through drugs and recklessness bc that is the reality of the situation.
Soooo basically what you are trying to say is...... its about drugs lol

Just getting fucked up on downers and booze and embracing your own misery from whatever has caused it, most likely a girl.
embracing depression
My favorite song by them! Plus it's on their best album. The chorus always sounds a little depressed, but I like that.
i think its about the highs and lows of drugs
the dizzy haze of drugs and it might not be the true meaning, but for me it represent someone who can't make up their mind about a relationship/thing and the various oscillations they experience. they're in control. but they can't make up their mind. the other person is upset but the narrator just wants to be free, if only we were nothing at all - if they could just see that life is a transient experience and be as detached as the person in charge. just go with the flow. enjoy it. don't put so much depth into everything.

I think this song is about wanting to escape reality and just completely letting go (in Josh Homme's case that would be via drugs). The song also expresses the strange feeling of actually wanting to be a nobody and just having no connections, so you could exist in peace. One of my favorite by QOTSA.
I get the same vibes from this song. Just disappearing and being left alone. "So you could exist in peace" I like how you worded that friend.

I've always felt that this song was specifically about the downers in the world of drugs... painkillers, valium, that sort of thing. It sounds like he prefers to have his mind blown and make him "lazy", rather than get "up" on something else, like speed or coke. For those long hard days where the boredom is overwhelming, it's the only way to do it. Who knows, I don't, it's just my interpretation. What a delicious song.
It is about the ups and downs of drugs....this song is totally fucking freakin fabulous!!!! It was played on the movie Wrong turn...it went brill with that movie on that scene!
Opiates..."if only" you could use them for "those long long days of no escaping"...but the truth is they "let you down so broken hearted"...and you "dont wanna stop, and ya dont wanna know"..the baggage that comes with such a blissful hi.."if only" thats all it was a hi... .perhaps he works hard with his band and life to hold it together just so he can get hi once and a while or as he puts it"blow your mind and make it lazy".. "hold the wheel just to let go"....anyways just what it sounds like to me..just my opinion
Haha! I love how half of QotSA's songs are about drugs, and the other half are about sex. Josh Homme is seriously the most awesome man I know of!
