Q&A
Yeah, Whatever Lyrics
And you're primitive...
And you're cynical to me
And I chewed down on the bit
And almost swallowed it
You sit all alone with your color TV
Your hair starts to glisten
In spite of the fleas
We don't have to stay friends
Let's pretend to be enemies
Yeah, whatever makes you happy
Yeah, whatever makes it beautiful
Yeah, whatever leaves you satisfied
'Cuz I'm out of time
For now
And you're paranoid
As you look me up and down
And I'm soaked in gasoline
Mud and ice cream
You sit by the phone
With your tongue hanging out
You cradle the flies in the back of your mouth
We don't have to stay friends
Let's pretend to be enemies
Damned if you do
Dead if you don't
Damned if you do
What if you won't
You must be aware what you're
Doing to me
We sunk like a stone on a rock
In the sea
We don't have to stay friends
(Not for very long)
We don't have to stay friends
(Just because you're gone)
You get what you want 'cuz you won't let it die
Yeah, whatever makes you happy
Yeah, whatever leaves you insecure
Yeah, whatever seems to break you down
'Cuz I'm out of time
But I'm feeling fine
And you're cynical to me
And I chewed down on the bit
And almost swallowed it
Your hair starts to glisten
In spite of the fleas
We don't have to stay friends
Let's pretend to be enemies
Yeah, whatever makes it beautiful
Yeah, whatever leaves you satisfied
'Cuz I'm out of time
For now
As you look me up and down
And I'm soaked in gasoline
Mud and ice cream
With your tongue hanging out
You cradle the flies in the back of your mouth
We don't have to stay friends
Let's pretend to be enemies
Dead if you don't
Damned if you do
What if you won't
Doing to me
We sunk like a stone on a rock
In the sea
(Not for very long)
We don't have to stay friends
(Just because you're gone)
Yeah, whatever leaves you insecure
Yeah, whatever seems to break you down
But I'm feeling fine

I agree.. i like this song a lot... I was trying to find this song online.. but I didn't know the title or who it was by, and i didn't know how it went... all i knew that it was a song that people said was written about a dog.. so i searched the lyrics for the word "fleas" cuz i knew it was in there somewhere lol and I found it and i screamed like a 10 year old girl lol. yes i like this song a lot :-)
Most of the interpretations of this song are related to either a dog or the second half of a bad relationship, but I disagree with both of them. I think this song takes place after a breakup ('you sit all alone with your color TV;' 'just because you're gone'). She said she still wants to be friends, but she's not over him, so she is acting up ('you get what you do 'cuz you won't let it die'). He says "sure, 'we don't have to be friends,' whatever's best for you" because he's trying to act like he's over her ('but I'm feeling fine'). But he's too quick to agree ('we don't have to stay friends'), and he sounds kind of bitter ('yeah, whatever makes you happy;' 'her hair starts to glisten in spite of the fleas'), so we know he's full of it--he's not over her, either. They're both still sort of in love with each other, but they can't act like it after a breakup, so instead they snipe at each other and pick fights ('let's pretend to be enemies'). It's obvious that they can't keep going like this ('we're sunk like a stone on a rock in the sea') and that they ought to cut off all contact. They're miserable now, but they're still afraid that not seeing each other at all might somehow be worse ('damned if you do, fucked if you don't'). So they both stay in this bitter, post-breakup non-friendship that isn't getting any better, because it's not as scary as change.
And, being human, he blames her for the whole thing ('you must be aware what you're doing to me').
This is a great song.. my boyfriend put it on a Mix CD for me. it always gets my energy up. :)
This is my favorite Splender song...is it really written about a dog? That's slightly disappointing. I always thought of it as perfect in describing the situation between an ex-boyfriend and I.
this is my favorite Splender song, remembers me a ex-girlfriend I don´t wanna see anymore
a dog... interesting. whoever it's written about... I love it!!!
This is an awesome song.... I always thought it was about a relationship with someone he doesnt wanna have a relationship with anymore. He's talking about her bad traits and stuff and how they should pretend to be enemies. Cool song.
Really cool song. I find myself singing it to myself a lot. I like it. Thanks
