Unhappy Birthday Lyrics
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
'Cause you're evil
And you lie
And if you should die
I may feel slightly sad
(But I won't cry)
Loved and lost
And some may say
"When usually it's nothing
Surely you're happy
It should be this way!"
I say:
"No, I'm gonna kill my dog,"
And:
"May the lines sag, may the lines sag
Heavy and deep tonight,"
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
'Cause you're evil
And you lie
And if you should die
I may feel slightly sad
(But I won't cry)
Loved and lost
And some may say:
"When usually it's nothing
Surely you're happy
It should be this way!"
I said "No,"
And then I shot myself
So, drink, drink, drink
And be ill tonight
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind

In an album that has quite a few references to Oscar Wilde, this song reminds me of the behaviour of Lord Alfred 'Bosie' Douglas who left offensive cards for Oscar to open whenever they fell out. He did once on Oscars birthday too.
Not saying this is about Bosie and Wilde but it sums up Bosies petulent mood.
i actually wished this girl who broke my heart an unhappy birthday after listening to this song...only it blew up in my face when she said "what a fucking morrissey rip off"
This song is hilarious. It's so morbid but really plays it for laughs, I think, in a way that's hard to describe. I like how he matter-of-factly declares that he shot himself, and then just keeps going with the song.
This song makes me crack up. I wish I could play this song to a certain someone on their birthday, but I'm trying to be the "bigger person" or whatever. It's too bad. But Moz's lyrics pwn nonetheless.
:) love this song,, and fuck you mr.im-gonna-rip-your-heart-out-and-break-it,, put your mouth on mi piece.
this song is great!!!! to me it means, we broke up and i hate you for breaking my heart and i hope the worst things happen to you on your birthday....."Hell hath no fury..."
It's my birthday today and I listened to this song this morning. It made me feel quite happy really. When you think about it, it really means "You left me and I'm bitter cos I wish you hadn't".
i love songs like this
Happy Birthday Random Boy! how old are you? did you get cake? how about presents? are you gonna have a party? can i come? why not? F--k off!
Terrible song, one of the worst Smiths LP songs. Cant think of a worse song on the eponymous debut or on any of the following three.
