okay this is what courtney says in the sleeve of "the first session" CD ... "okay, like "Retard Girl," that's our single. It's about getting picked on in school, anyone who's ever been picked on in a big way, or a small way. I just got this vibe one day about how when I was in school I was really shy and sort of picked on, and I swore that I would never pick on people who were picked on. I pick on people that nobody else picks on. People think that song is making fun of some retarded girl but it's about me! About that feeling of alienation, I was so quiet. I was the quietest person and I got picked on but I changed my ways!" so there you go.

It's about how Courtney felt alienated growing up, through the eyes of a tormentor. It's not ignorant; just cathartic.

himtopia go fuck yourself. Courtney wrote this song about herself as a child. She was shy and people would make fun of her. In an interview about this song she said something like it pisses me off that some people think I'm bashing mentally challenged people with this song when it's really about me. She was also called pee girl when she was younger.

A particularly interesting line is #13, which I believe should be "As shines the moon among the lesser fires" - that line is written in the insert for the First Session CD, both in English (p. 4) and in Latin (back). It is apparently a translation of part of a line from the poet Horace (Carmina, Liber 1, XII, 47): "velut inter ignis luna minores". I think it is a clever way of indicating that the person being picked on for being different from her tormentors is actually different in a good way, i.e., better - a bright moon among much dimmer stars. It forms a great ironic constrast with the title. "She don't think like the others do" - they probably don't read Horace (in Latin) and use interesting metaphors to get their revenge.

I don't think it's actually about real retarded people, but rather the odd kid at school that everybody picked on for being different. It's okay, but not the best Hole song (although I suppose it was one of the first...)

I've not heard this song...but the lyrics just caught my attention. I think it probably is about the girl everyone picked on at school. Maybe it is about Courtney, but i don't know. I don't think it's actually about actual retarded people.
