I had a very intense relationship with a guy about 10 years ago. We live in different states and we met when we were both traveling, so it had to end eventually and we kind of lost touch over the years – I moved on, I met someone else and got married - but I have never stopped thinking about him, ever. I always thought that I was an idiot to feel that way and thought that he had probably moved on and didn’t ever think of me. But, we recently got back in touch and we became friends. He came to visit and it turns out that he has always felt the same way about me and he had thought of me all the time over the years as well. One night, we found ourselves together, alone, a storm outside … and that’s where the song comes into the story. We were lovers again, just for the night, and then the next day I went back to my man and he went back to his world. And, we went back to being friends … because we had to. I know it was probably a ‘bad’ thing to do – but it felt good to be with him and I have no regrets. I still think of him all the time but I know we can’t be together. My heart breaks every time I hear this song.

yes, he is talking about an affair. everything that has been posted thus far is very true, when we are younger. i can recall these situations growing up and in college, and some were as magical as the imagery of the song depicts. however as we get older, these best friends of our get married and the opportunities dwindle. the line "go back to your man", she may be married, or just in a relationship; regardless this off chance has presented itself, "so here we are". true love is wanting what is absolutely the best for that other person, and sometimes that does not include mine, yours, or who evers involvement with them......"but just for tonight". look carefully at the meaning of a “rouge kiss”, he knows this is wrong because of her involvement, but he can not control his desires……”but just for tonight”.

I see this as a sort of one-night thing BUT not a one-night-stand because these two actually care about each other, so it wouldn't be as 'shallow' as that. However, she is in a relationship ("but tomorrow go back to your man"), so it can't go any further than that one night. I feel it's about two friends, who might be better together, but don't get together for some reason...she just stays with 'her man,' and the whole romance that could be born out of that one night is simply overlooked because they HAVE to "go back to being friends." It's a sad song, actually...but the rythm makes it so upbeat that even with those lyrics, it just cheers me up!

to me this song is written about two people with a history and for one reason or another the can not be together as they hope but they share the occasional night together and if thats all they can have then thats what they will take.

Love at its finest...best friends making the dive...realizing that they can't be anything more...all they can do is wait and make the best of what they do have.....love.

this may be my favorite Dave song ever. It is always the ones that get no play on the radio! Totally about best friends crossing the line. An emotion that almost everyone goes thru.
