Rosie Lyrics

Well I'm sitting on a windowsill, blowing my horn
Nobody's up except the moon and me,
And a lazy old tomcat on a midnight spree
All that you left me was a melody.
Rosie, why do you evade? Rosie, how can I persuade? Rosie...

And the moon's all up, full and big, apricot tips in an indigo sky,
And I've been loving you, Rosie, since the day I was born
And I'll love you, Rosie 'til the day I die.
Rosie, why do you evade? Rosie, how can I persuade? Rosie...

Rosie, why do you evade? Rosie, how can I persuade? Rosie...

And I'm sitting on a windowsill, blowing my horn
Nobody's up except the moon and me,
And a lazy old tomcat on a midnight spree
All that you left me was a melody.
Rosie, why do you evade? Rosie, how can I persuade? Rosie...

my mom just started listening to Tom Waits, well she used to listen to him but recently got back into him, and this song inspired her to do this painting of a man sitting against a windowsill playing a trumpet, with all the imagery this song conveys, and the paintings just incredible, anyone who's a fan of Tom would love to see it

My boyfriend played this to me and I cried like a baby! It seems so appropriate, he never knows what to do with me, and he's scared I'm going to leave, but he loves me, and I love him :D I'm so sad!

@PrettyLittleRosie Haha hi there. It's probably very weird getting a response to this comment almost 20 years later. I just can't believe I came across a comment from so long ago. I have no idea if you will ever see this response but I'm so curious if you and your boyfriend are still together 19 years on?! Ps. I'm 17 and this song is amazing and Tom Waits is a bloody lyrical genius. I hope you get back to this. There is only 1 other comment on this song thats from 2023. The others are from 2004/2005!

Don't be too sad. I don't know why, but the song always reminds me of the TV sitcom 'All In The Family'. Please don't take this the wrong way, PrettyLittleRosie, but maybe it's because I can see Archie Bunker playing it! 'THOSE WERE THE DAYS!'

Tis a song about a fading, painful love. The one that hurts the most. Every man experiences that, sooner or later

This song is a beautiful ode to the sunset with its rosie-red colors.

The narrator, having just watched the sunset evade into apricot tips on an Indigo sky, feels that the sunset inspired a melody - picks up his horn and plays a tune.

Before thinking a bit about the lyrics, one could expect "Rosie" to be a woman in the narrators life. The sunset however makes much more sense. If you consider the chorus: The narrator have loved Rosie since he was born, will continue till he dies, and Rosie evades. The sunset evades every night, yet keeps playing a part in his life. A love interest would not have been there from he was born, and if she evaded him, he would probably get over it before he dies.
