Had Me a Girl Lyrics
Well I had me a girl in LA
I knew she couldn't stay
Had me a girl in San Diego
One day she just had to go
And I had me a girl Tallahassee
Boy what a foxy lassie
And my doctor says I'll be alright
But I'm feelin' blue
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And my doctor says I'll be alright
But I'm feelin blue
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And I had me a girl in Mississippi
Oh she sure was kippy
Had me a girl in England
She done split for the mainland
And I had me a girl in New York
She up and pulled my cork
And my doctor says I'll be alright
But I'm feelin' blue
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And my doctor says I'll be alright
But I'm feelin blue
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And my doctor says I'll be alright
Then I had me a girl in North Dakota
She was just fillin' her quota
Then I had me a girl in Chula Vista
I was in love with her sister
Then I had me a girl in
And my doctor says I'll be alright
But I'm feelin' blue
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And my doctor says I'll be alright
But I'm feelin blue
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And my doctor says I'll be alright
Then I had me a girl in France
Just wanted to get in my pants
had me a girl in Toledo
Boy she sure was neato
Then I had me a girl in North Carolina
She's still on my mind
And my doctor says I'll be alright
But I'm feelin' blue
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And my doctor says I'll be alright
And my doctor says I'll be alright
But I'm feelin blue
And my doctor says I'll be alright

I always felt this song was a man in the hospital after a serious accident or discovering a serious illness. He is all alone with no one there to support him. The Dr. says he will be OK, but he is feeling lonely and reminiscing about his past lovers, how none of them worked out and about how now he is alone with no one who loves him to care for him. That his past girls are all from different locales suggests that this might be the same character as in Tom Traubert's Blues (this would be a prequel to that song).
Although jackasher's comment feels pretty accurate, i'd like to share my 0,02$ as well :-)
I feel like this song is simply about all the broken relationships, when even though you know that 'there's plenty of fish in the sea' (doctor says I'll be alright), you still feel the sadness and loneliness after a break up (But I'm feelin' blue) and simply can't help it.
There's always a reason why she left outside of the obvious. The meaning hits home when during the song he can't think what of where or why the split, and he hums the lyrics
