This song really touches me, I remember the video being very sweet as well. I was so naive when it came out and having a taste of what love is..."for the first time I'm not afraid to love". Only once she's left does he realize that she inspired him, and this song is an ode to how she changed him. It's a romantic song, an ode to love, to how one person can come into someone elses life and make them whole.
For some reason, the very first time I heard this song, I felt that the author and singer for that matter was singing to the Virgin Mary. Even now, after heaing the song many times, I get the same interpretation. I know this is likely a love song to a mere mortal, but it just speaks more to spiritual love vs. a love affair to me.
