Flame Turns Blue Lyrics

I went looking for someone I left behind
Yeah but no-one just a stranger did I find
I never noticed hadn't seen it as it grew
The void between us where the flame turns blue

Different places yeah but they all look the same
Dreams of faces in the streets devoured by names
I'm in collision with every stone I ever threw
And blind ambition where the flame turns blue

Worlds dismantled hey and all the books unbound
Conversations though we utter not a sound
I heard a rumour I don't know if its true
That you'd meet me where the flame turns blue

So I venture underneath the leaden sky
See the freight train with its one fierce eye
And then I listen as it tears teh night into
With a whistle and the flame turns blue

In the morning I will sing
In the morning I will sing

Through the lemon trees the diamonds of light
Break in splinters on the pages where I write
That if I lost you I don't know what I'd do
Burn forever where the flame turns blue
Yeah if I lost you I don't know what I'd do
Burn forever where the flame turns blue

In the morning I will sing
In the morning I will sing

I think this is one of David's better written songs. A very sad song about meeting up with an old lover who has changed a lot. He missed her so he went to her, but she's a stranger now. He's going through town and getting stabbed by all these memories of the mistakes he made. He's hoping that she's going to meet him somewhere down the road. He keeps hanging onto that hope that she'll meet him just a bit down the road.

"I'm in collission with every stone I ever threw..."

So poignant.

Yeah, beautiful beautiful line. Kinda like all the bad decisions that he has made are all coming back now.

@CorrieStrandjord yes, very insightful lyric

'cept the blue flame is actually the hottest (white is actually hotter I think then UV), red/orange is the least hot then it goes into infrared...

Great song though, whatever it means...

@mickal555 it is also the safest: all the gas is being combusted

i always wondered what he meant by the lyrics "flame turns blue." recently, i listened to the song and got an idea. if you think about flames, a blue flame is the coolest (as opposed to red, the hottest)... using flame as a symbol of love, then the blue flame symbolizes a weakening love. this makes sense since the two people in the song have gone in different directions. so yeah, that's my interpretation. and i love the "i'm in collision with every stone i ever threw" line too...

I think what he means by "when the flame turns blue" is that he will be reunited with her as the love is strongest like the flame is hottest...

But that is unlikely to happen as jag3892 highlighted earlier...

The man is a hero like... Great song, great guitar, great voice...

It's actually not a sad song at all. The song is a dream about losing your loved one then waking to realize the true importance of the relationship.

A flame has roughly four zones so think of the zone where the flame is blue as the void between two people. Not a physical void but an emotional void or distance.

The freight train is the reason behind this void, because the song states "it tears the night in two", night being the union they had, becoming separate and torn apart and thus the flame turns blue.

The next morning awake, he writes in his journal that IF he lost her, he'd burn in that void forever, without her. Notice how the dream is dark and sad by the term, leaden sky, yet in the morning its bright and sunny suggesting hope and lessons learned.

And in the morning I will sing.

I agree with thomashall1 that this is a dream, but I think it might be a dream he has about his significant other while he's on tour. Almost like an omen about falling apart while he devotes himself to his musical career. The places all look the same, and the freight train represents the travel from place to place and the time consumed. I picture him waking up relieved that it was a dream, and he immediately writes in his journal to capture the significance of his dream

you're all wrong! it about Davids Love for Trains. dont ask me to explain the lyrics. as with all of his songs the lyrics don't tell much of a story. David Gray explained the meaning of this song in an interview.. Still all his songs are great

@Cookie65 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lY2Tbs0stJI he explains it himself here & a bit different than above

Much agreed, CorrieStrandjord. :)

Such a good song with which to start the day.

A blue flame is the most dangerous, so this could mean that it's the most dangerous kind of love? C'est possible?
