Wires and Waves Lyrics
There are twelve hours, there's a day between us
You called to say you're sorry in your own way
There are oceans and waves and wires between us
And you called to say you're getting older
Sometimes, planes, they smash up in the sky
Sometimes, lonely hearts, they just get lonelier
How did you survive all those fires and floods?
How did you survive your insufferable friends?
It was the plough that broke the western plains
And it's just, my heart gets rejected by my veins
And sometimes, planes, they smash up in the sky
And sometimes, lonely hearts, they just get lonelier
And lonelier, and lonelier, and lonelier
You called to say you're sorry in your own way
There are oceans and waves and wires between us
And you called to say you're getting older
Sometimes, lonely hearts, they just get lonelier
How did you survive your insufferable friends?
It was the plough that broke the western plains
And it's just, my heart gets rejected by my veins
And sometimes, lonely hearts, they just get lonelier
And lonelier, and lonelier, and lonelier

i think this sounds like a long distance relationship, he's telling her now or never
maybe it isnt really a long distance relationship... he could live next door, but she is just being metaphorical and saying there is a lot of space between them, in their ways, and he just isnt cutting it for her.
i love that line.. "and it's just my heart gets rejected by my veins". i haven't really read too deeply into it, but it just struck a chord with me.
i agree with empirer, rilo kiley is awesome, and this is a great song.
"lonely hearts, they just get lonelier, lonelier, lonelier" its so pretty. i love how the tunes are so upbeat while her singing has a slight sad ring to it.
some of it seems to be about the distance between people who used to be really close? but this line 'Sometimes, planes, they crash up in the sky Sometimes, lonely hearts, they just get lonelier' - sounds to me like things can go wrong at any time, and that things dont always get better in the end. people always say it'll get better but sometimes it wont. people always tell people who are scared of flying that it'll be fine, but some planes really do crash. maybe i dont know!
to me, it's about being involved with someone far away, be it emotionally or physically, and she cares a great deal about the person, but she's frustrated and longing for things to happen NOW rather than LATER.
the bit about the phone call in the beginning seems to be an illustration of the fact the person is hot and cold with her, possibly cancelling plans to see her, saying "we can do it later," and she just wants things to happen when she KNOWS she has the chance, rather than rescheduling them for a later unknown time.
this song is her plea to the person letting them know how she's feeling. it's saying that all the waiting, well, it may be setting them up for something good in the long-run(you know, the whole "someday, things will be better" thing), but meanwhile, RIGHT NOW, she's only getting lonelier from all of the waiting around.
this is one of my favorite rilo kiley songs. great melody, and yeah, I agree... I like the contrast between the music itself and the lyrics. the combination gives it a sort of desperation. =P
to me it sounds like shes saying "smash up in the sky" not "crash" but hmm.. i dont know.

I obviously think that this is the greatest song in the whole world. (Check out the username.)
