Another Day Lyrics
Every day she takes a morning bath
She wets her hair
Wraps a towel around her
As she's heading for the bedroom chair
It's just another day
Slipping into stockings
Stepping into shoes
Dipping in the pocket of her raincoat
Ah, it's just another day
At the office where the papers grow
She takes a break
Drinks another coffee
And she finds it hard to stay awake
It's just another day
So sad, so sad
Sometimes she feels so sad
Alone in her apartment she'd dwell
Till the man of her dreams comes to break the spell
Ah, stay, don't stand her up
And he comes and he stays
But he leaves the next day
So sad
Sometimes she feels so sad
As she posts another letter to the sound of five
People gather 'round her
And she finds it hard to stay alive
It's just another day
So sad, so sad
Sometimes she feels so sad
Alone in her apartment she'd dwell
Till the man of her dreams comes to break the spell
Ah, stay, don't stand her up
And he comes and he stays
But he leaves the next day
So sad
Sometimes she feels so sad
Every day she takes a morning bath
She wets her hair
Wraps a towel around her
As she's heading for the bedroom chair
It's just another day
Slipping into stockings
Stepping into shoes
Dipping in the pocket of her raincoat
Ah, it's just another day
She wets her hair
Wraps a towel around her
As she's heading for the bedroom chair
It's just another day
Stepping into shoes
Dipping in the pocket of her raincoat
Ah, it's just another day
She takes a break
Drinks another coffee
And she finds it hard to stay awake
It's just another day
Sometimes she feels so sad
Alone in her apartment she'd dwell
Till the man of her dreams comes to break the spell
And he comes and he stays
But he leaves the next day
So sad
Sometimes she feels so sad

Dipping in the pocket of her raincoat
Ah, it's just another day

This song is so perfect at describing a life. A single woman loves a man who comes and goes without ever committing to her in any way. Due to this, everything else in her life kind of fades into a blur around her as she becomes worn down by the situation with the man. She's feeling like her life is just a permanent lull. Monotonous, boring, always the same, filled only with her work. Every day is "just another day" in a long series of days exactly like the one before it. I love how the lyrics focus on the tiny details of getting ready for her day. Those details are all that make up most of her life. The kind of sadness associated with this concept is expressed very well in a clever way using that kind of imagery.
I sometimes find myself relating to this song, because at times, a situation can just cast a huge shadow over everything else in life and then the days just all seem the same because the fog of it paints everything in the same boring haze.
An interesting side-note in this song is his reference to 'As she posts another letter to the sound of five'. I investigated and found that 'The Sound of 5 a.m." was an instrumental pop hit which was played on the English radio stations in the late 40's and early 50's. McCartney mentions it because it always seemed to be on the radio his mother was listening to while working around the house.
@StreetSense what an excellent side-note. I always wondered what it meant and I received some absurd answers. Now I now.

A lot of controversy around this song when it came out. Linda co-wrote it. She liked to add a bit of reggae to songs so it is very likely that the faux-reggae sound is her idea. However, everyone wailed when Paul added her to the writing credit. How could this be? She has no prior musical training, blah, blah, blah - while forgetting that none of the Beatles could read or write music either. Other critics asserted that Paul put her on the credits to somehow get an extra monetary percentage for co-writing. Ridiculous. Then the critics pounced that the music was insipid, sugary pap. One even went so far as to call it an advertisement for vaginal deodorant. Nonetheless, the general public did take a liking to the song and it performed very well on the charts. It is definitely in the 'Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da' vein. But no-one puts them together like this except Paul. Yeah, the lyrics frequently tend toward molasses but in retrospect this is one of Paul's more coherent and best resolved post-Beatle lyrics. The melody is top-notch as well and even edges into precisely conveying the heartbreak and isolation to the listener much like he did with 'Eleanor Rigby'. At the time when this come on the radio most people still living in the musical fallout of Beatle glory would disparage this tune or even turn it off. These days it comes back and has aged so well. A welcome song to hear every now and then.
Yeah, it's about a woman's mundane life, but there's more to it. She's also an addict.
"dipping in the pocket of her raincoat" = getting money to pay for what the "man of her dreams" (drug dealer) has come to deliver or "break the spell"; "drinks another coffee and she finds it hard to stay awake" = probably on amphetamines or cocaine; "sometimes she feels so sad" = obvious to anyone who's ever taken amphetamines and felt the crash. (Not a fun feeling).
She's a functioning addict. She keeps a job, and gets done what has to be done, but that's about it. Rather than living a normal life and socializing, she choses to take whatever it is she takes to get through 'another day'.
@CandyRocker you're on some next level, "Elliott Smith" type shit, right here. And i really fucking love that. It's not what this song means to me, but that's a great in depth interpretation. Very powerful and thank you for that amazing input - even if i might not agree, (just because of my personal interpretation and opinion,) I love it. Much kudos to you. (And yes i love Elliott Smith, too; just as i love the Beatles and Paul and many others.)

Y'all being a little butthurt imo when interpreting this song but that's my opinion (don't get hurt by my opinion lol). But on the other hand -and this is very important, because i always stand by this- One thing i love about many musicians and artists is that they don't tell you what it means, so each individual listener can interpret it how they want to, and the music takes on personal meaning- and the song becomes much more than just a song, it takes on a life of it's own, with each individual person. That bring said, to me it reminds me of my love and me. He travels for work, sometimes gone for months in end, only coming back every other weekend (driving sometimes up to ten hours both ways), and to me, this song just reminds me of how dull my life is when he's not around. I do the same exact thing when he's gone as i do when he's around, but the difference is he's there. And let me tell you, that makes a world of difference. So, to me, it's about making sacrifice so he can continue his dream career, despite the negative effects on us both. The traveling won't last forever, but we will survive it, as we have time and time again. But that doesn't make the distance any easier. This song helps me express that feeling. I'm not saying anyone is wrong or right. But tl;dr: this is a great song because of what it means to me. And it's greatly because of what it means to YOU. Either way, it's fucking great.
Beautiful song.
Fantastic song! Ah, it's just another day...
Great song! Ah, it's just another day...
this song is talking about the routine in our material life in which we are all go in ordinary circles and only concern about our work, and only love can break the continuety of that circle but just for a short time and then we are back in the circle of ordinary life the ABBA have realesed a song which has the same meanings called "the day before you came " both of these songs is owsome
I've been a fan of Paul McCartney for some time, and I must say, I've never liked this song at all. Check out the rocking B-side to this single, "Oh Woman Oh Why," which is much better than this dull little tune.
