The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks Lyrics
There was beer all over the dance floor
and the band was playin' rhythm and blues
You got down and did the gator, and half
an hour later, you were barfin' all over your
Girlfriend's shoes.
But the Greeks don't want no freaks.
The Greeks don't want no freaks
Just put a little smile on them rosy cheeks,
'Cause the Greeks don't want no freaks. (GATOR!!)
She was the pride and the passion of Dixie
She did exactly what her daddy had planned.
She was perfect little sister until somebody missed
her and they found her in the bushes with
the boys in the band
But the Greeks don't want no freaks
The Greeks don't want no freaks
So put a great big smile on them rosy cheeks,
'Cause the Greeks don't want no freaks
No, the Greeks don't want no freaks
Said, the Greeks don't want no freak
Just put that monster smile on them rosy cheeks
'Cause the Greeks don't want no freaks
No, the Greeks don't want no freaks,
Ahh...

I really don't think they are referring to a gang rape in the verse with the sorority girl. It says she was a "perfect little sister... UNTIL", which implies that she damaged her own reputation. "Found her in the bushes with the boys in the band" doesn't sound like a rape at all. You wouldn't use that sort of "nudge nudge, wink wink" language to describe it if it were forced. She simply snuck off with them to have sex, because she is not at all the "perfect little sister" that everybody thinks she is. Otherwise, this is a pretty lousy throw-away song. I remember when the album came out. There was no way it was going to be anything but a let-down after the meteoric success of "Hotel California", but The Long Run was even worse than a let-down. It sounds like a band who is burned out and putting out an album because they have to. And I have read a few interviews with Henley and Frey that indicate that is exactly what it was. I particularly remember hearing "The Greeks..." when I bought the record, and thinking it sounded like it needed more verses and some more melody or a solo or something, but they just didn't want to bother
[Edit: Added info about the band's state of mind when doing this album]
I really want to believe that this song was written about a frat party.
Does anyone actually know what this song is about and/or why it was written?

It could very well be about a frat party. I'm not sure which one (or both), but either Henley or Frey have ties to Gainesville, Florida (as does Tom Petty), home of the University of Florida. There's a dance called the gator where you flop to the floor and lie on your stomach and wiggle your arms and legs, which originates from a football game many years ago when I believe Steve Spurrier was the quarterback. The Gators were well ahead of their opponent, and on a play in the fourth quarter the whole Gator defense flopped...

The Gators were well ahead of their opponent, and on a play in the fourth quarter the whole Gator defense flopped down to their stomachs when the ball was snapped so the opponent could score, thus giving Spurrier another chance to get the ball and set a season record for passing or whatever. Jimmy Buffet, a long-time Florida resident and the "Monstertones" are singing backup in this also.
It's just you.
I think the song is satirically happy. maybe not as far as "gang rape" but I definitely think there's an undertone of criticism of the whole fraternity/sorority crap. They don't want no freaks but they act like freaks themselves...hypocrisy? idk could be completely off, but I like the song.
Greek houses are often full of otherwise-conventional people who sometimes binge drink, get out of control, and act freakish that way.
"In the bushes" could be 100% consensual. People hook up outside sometimes.
The key there is "boys in the band." The most prominent woman at the party hooked up with them after their set--not with the frat boy "puking on her shoes."
GOOD SONG
its obvious that the Greeks don't want no freaks
Is it just me, or is there some sinister undertones to the song? To me it sounds like a gang rape. :/
