Lyin' Eyes Lyrics

City girls just seem to find out early
How to open doors with just a smile
A rich old man
And she won't have to worry
She'll dress up all in lace and go in style
Late at night a big old house gets lonely
I guess ev'ry form of refuge has its price
And it breaks her heart to think her love is
Only given to a man with hands as cold as ice

So she tells him she must go out for the evening
To comfort an old friend who's feelin' down
But he knows where she's goin' as she's leavin'
She is headed for the cheatin' side of town

You can't hide your lyin' eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide your lyin eyes

On the other side of town a boy is waiting
with fiery eyes and dreams no one could steal
She drives on through the nice anticipating
'Cause he makes her feel the way she used to feel

She rushes to his arms,
They fall together
She whispers that it's only for awhile
She swears that soon she'll be comin' back forever
She pulls away and leaves him with a smile

You can't hide your lyin' eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide you lyin' eyes

She gets up and pours herself a strong one
And stares out at the stars up in the sky
Another night, it's gonna be a long one
She draws the shade and hangs her head to cry

She wonders how it ever got this crazy
She thinks about a boy she knew in school
Did she get tired or did she just get lazy?
She's so far gone she feels just like a fool

My, oh my, you sure know how to arrange things
You set it up so well, so carefully
Ain't it funny how your new life didn't change things
You're still the same old girl you used to be

You can't hide your lyin eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes
There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes
Honey, you can't hide your lyin' eyes

I think that in this song there are two types of cheating -- the obvious cheating on the older man with the younger, but there are also these lines:

She whispers that it's only for awhile She swears that soon she'll be comin' back forever She pulls away and leaves him with a smile

Which to me sound like she is making false promises to the younger man, because she doesn't want to leave the life of luxury she has with the older. So she is "cheating" him in a sense as well. She realizes that she is stuck in a place where she can either have love or money, but not both.

I think that the last half of the song sounds like she had plans for her life, to go out and marry rich and become wealthy, but it didn't change anything, so now she has given up a life of happiness for nothing really, because the money doesn't satisfy and neither does the old man (cold as ice). And I don't think that her husband is saying it, I think she is reflecting on herself and coming to the realization that she didn't get what she wanted... (feels like a fool).

yeah, she sees her lying eyes.. That's why she cries in the big old lonely house, she realizes that she isn't getting what she wants out of life.

when i saw the eagles live glen frey commented "i dedicate this song to my first wife, plantiff" he also added "this song is about that secret love triangle that you cant never win" basically its about a woman that goes off and cheats on her husband and tries to hide it but it is very obvious. EAGLES ROCK!!

I think that this song is about more than just a woman who is cheating on her husband. Yes, she is lying to her husband, and it's obvious; but she is also lying to herself. She tries to tell herself that she is happy, first that the rich old man makes her happy, and then that having an affair makes her happy. But she's "still the same old girl you used to be" and she can't deny to herself that she is disappointed with what her life has become.

Thanks for your comment. Was listening to this song on radio today. I was captivated. It left me with unanswered questions. So sought out the Web to understand I then remembered that I recently read a wonderful novel by Emily Giffin called "Where we belong". Its a story certainly goes along the same lines. Very touching.

@psyche EXACTLY RIGHT! She pours herself a tall one and lies to herself. Can't be faithful to her husband or her lover or her own lying self. The song is a work of genius. Tragedy.

Woman marries older man for money. Man loves her, but can't satisfy her. She cheats. He knows. She promises the younger man she is cheating with she will leave the old man and run away with him. It's a lie. He knows. She murders the old man. The young man she wants to run away with wont. She is now the the one being lied to. Nothing changed in her life by killing the old man. She is still unhappy. Full circle.

You gotta love The Eagles. Not only do they have great lyrics that flow, they are able to shape the lyrics into a tune that is just as great as the lyrics. Both the music and the lyrics in this song convey the passion and hurt in this song.

You know a band is really good when they make music like this.

I love the quote "ev'ry form of refuge has its price. It's so true in life that whenever you seek shelter from something there is a tradeoff.

gotta love the music to this song. you know who it reminds me of? anna nicole smith. she married that old guy for "love" but to me it seemed like MONEY.. and i can't say she cheated on him like in this song. it's a bittersweet song, am i right or am i right? the part.. "she's headed for the cheatin' side of town. you can't hide your lyin' eyes." gives me a sad smile.

According to the Eagles' biography book, the original inspiration of the song came from a waitress who was serving them when they were on the road. After she took their order, one of the guys said, "She sure has some lyin' eyes" and then they all started scribbling lyrics on napkins.

That was the platform and then of course the rest of the story was built from there...

I was breaking up with my first wife when this song was on the charts, and it was devastating to me. At the time, I was working in the Rickenbacher (the guitars) wood shop and I remember working at a drill press, hearing this on the radio, and tears just streaming down my face. It was many years before I could listen to it without tearing up.

I just read Acey Dearest's above post (#6), and something struck me... the last lines before the chorus >>>can be in either voice

I'm sorry :( I know it must've stung :(
