In the misty morning, on the edge of time
We've lost the rising sun, a final sign
As the misty morning rolls away to die
Reaching for the stars, we blind the sky

We sailed across the air before we learned to fly
We thought that it could never end
We'd glide above the ground before we learned to run, run
Now it seems our world has come undone

Oh they say that it's over
And it just had to be
Ooh they say that it's over
We're lost children of the sea, oh

We made the mountains shake with laughter as we played
Hiding in our corner of the world
Then we did the demon dance and rushed to nevermore
Threw away the key and locked the door

Oh they say that it's over, yeah
And it just had to be
Yes they say that it's over
We're lost children of the sea

In the misty morning, on the edge of time
We've lost the rising sun, the final sign
As the misty morning rolls away to die
Reaching for the stars, we blind the sky

Oh they say that it's over
And it just had to be
Oh they say that it's over
Poor lost children of the sea, yeah

Look out
The sky is falling down
Look out
The world is spinning round and round and round
Look out
The sun is going black, black
Look out
It's never never never coming back
Look out

This song is not about sex or drugs. It about growing up. Its about children becoming adults. Its about the end of childhood.

Oh they say that it's over And it just had to be Oh they say that it's over Poor lost children of the sea, yeah

LOOK OUT! The sky is falling down LOOK OUT! The world is spinning round and round and round LOOK OUT OUT Out out! The sun is going black, black. LOOK OUT! It's never never never coming back

Its about how people might wish they could go back in time and become a child again, but that can never happen. Your born you live you die THE END

Hopefully you can have a good life

Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.

Do not do magick you do not understand, Omri.

    Technology without ethics.

Learning to run before you can walk.

Not seeing the forest for the trees.

Incredible cosmic powers... itty bitty living space.

    Etc.

First, I found this on the net:

"Children of the Sea - there has been a lot of speculation that it is about Atlantis, but Dio has only spoke of it as a song about "ecological awareness".

So working off this basic direction, the song seems to be a commentary about mankind doing things before it truly understands the consequences of its action, ie. the reference to sailing across the air, before learning to fly, and thinking that this kind of thing would go on forever without a price to eventually pay for messing with the balance.

And finally, though we try to escape the world and darkening the sky by the millions, like locusts, we are caught in the maelstrom of the final convulsions of the Earth dying along with the Sun.

Given the title of the song, I always wondered if "We'd glide above the ground before we learned to run" was a reference to how in our evolutionary history we swam (when you swim, you do glide above the ground) before we "learned to run" (or even have legs, for that matter).

I think it's about where Sabbath were at this point in their history. I'll go into more detail if anyone's interested. I think it's a pretty good lyric.

lordjackass - You really, really, really need to utilize those to squishy-like thingies situated below your forehead when attempting to study material of this magnitude. Seriously... "Sex and death and drugs..." Wake up!

And with that, I'm off. I just felt like badgering an ignorant. And I did. :P

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
