Lord Of This World Lyrics
You're searching for your mind don't know where to start
Can't find the key to fit the lock on your heart
You think you know but you are never quite sure
Your soul is ill but you will not find a cure.
Your world was made for you by someone above
But you chose evil ways instead of love.
You made me master of the world where you exist
The soul I took from you was not even missed.
Lord of this world
Evil possessor
Lord of this world
He's your confessor now!
You think you're innocent you've nothing to fear
You don't know me you say, but isn't it clear?
You turn to me in all your worldly greed and pride
But will you turn to me when it's your turn to die?
Can't find the key to fit the lock on your heart
You think you know but you are never quite sure
Your soul is ill but you will not find a cure.
But you chose evil ways instead of love.
You made me master of the world where you exist
The soul I took from you was not even missed.
Evil possessor
Lord of this world
He's your confessor now!
You don't know me you say, but isn't it clear?
You turn to me in all your worldly greed and pride
But will you turn to me when it's your turn to die?

This song carries the message of "fuck you"? Sorry kid, but no. This song is a comment to the way people live in "worldly greed and pride" and do evil instead of good (or love, if you want to be true to the lyrics). Already stated, this is Satan's view upon our foolishness. How we live like he wants us to, make him Lord of our world, and in the end we claim that we do not know of or follow his evil ways.
Further on, Black Sabbath songs in general are alot deeper than just a "fuck you"-message. Hope you will realise that one day, and not think of Sabbath as something they are not.
This song, along with "Orchid," is about Satan and how he becomes Lord of the World due to sinners. The song is set in Satan's point of view. A great song.

You're right. I apologize for that post.
It's about how sneaky and tricky and truly evil the devil is and how he can't come and take over your heart once you've accepted Christ into your heart.
First of all, anyone who knows anything about Black Sabbath knows that at least a few of them have roots in the Church of England. I seriously doubt that Ozzy is a satan worshipper but he is, like the rest of us, a wounded soul. As far as the song goes, it is obviously Lucifer speaking to someone. This song was blatantly written by someone who knows at least something about the Bible. I think that too often we equate anything involved with Ozzy Osbourne and any of his associates to drugs and alcohol. We see only what is on the surface. Perhaps we should stop judging and start hearing. In the opening verse, ..."You're searching for your mind don't know where to start; Can't find the key to fit the lock on your heart; You think you know but you are never quite sure; Your soul is ill but you will not find a cure"... it is easy here to make a reference to the Jewish leaders that condemned and crucified Christ. These men were searching for righteousness but were looking in all the wrong places. They could not "find the key to pick the locks on their hearts" because they were looking to themselves and the elders rather than God/Jesus. The same can easily be said about self-righteous, condemning Christians today. The one's who spend all their energy pointing fingers at the world while doing their best to secure their own place in heaven have locked hearts just like the Jewish leaders of old and don't even realize that they are serving the very one that they are claiming is their sworn enemy, Lucifer. This can also be used to apply to atheists who put their faith in the world rather than God. The second verse, ..."Your world was made for you by someone above [God]; But you chose evil ways [greed, hate, gossip, self-righteousness, etc.] instead of love [faith in God/Jesus]; You made me master of the world where you exist; The soul I took from you was not even missed" ...Through the acts greed, self-righteousness, and so on, most of us have unwittingly made Lucifer our master. So sly is he that when we do this we don't even see it ourselves. We turn over our soul to him and don't even realize it. And finally, ..."You turn to me in all your worldly greed and pride; But will you turn to me when it's your turn to die?" ...We are quick to accept this dark master when it's all working out for us, but what about when we are on our death bed. Too often this is when we look back and see how we've really been living and who we've really been serving.
Of course, this is all opinion given that I have never met anyone from Black Sabbath and had the opportunity to sit down and talk to them about the song but if you look at the lyrics of another song by them, "After Forever", you will be able to see where I am coming from. Too often we just take what the media, and even the Church, say as written in stone when it usually isn't.
"But will you turn to me when it's your turn to die?"
i think thats so fricking true! i mean like i highly doubt when theyre lying on their death bed all these satan worshippers wil not be so devoted will they? and i think all the stupid atheist at my school should hear this song.......man its bs this is a good song

When I studied the life of Jesus Christ, I was intrigued by what he meant by "love thy neighbours" -after teaching the parable of the good samaritan. When I did some research, he meant love even others who are different from us. The list is long. It is a great responsibility that we Christians have.

Dude, this song is about people like you.

You think you're so holy because you "believe" in God. "You think you're innocent you've nothing to fear You don't know me, you say, but isn't it clear?"

But then, you ignore God's most important rule: love thy neighbour, or whatever it is in english. Atheist are not stupid, and don't try to cram your religion down their troats. Evil ways.

Don't be so sure you're good and don't know satan.

Well said above, I agree with you! We are not to judge people, 1/ because we Christians are going to church to learn, to change, which means without that, we would probably be worse than others, and 2/ If we think people have struggles we are to love them and reach out to them. That is what Christianity is supposed to be. I am sure Jesus Christ cries when he hears people take his name upon him and act so not like him. He loves us all: Black, White, Christians, non-Chritian, homosexuals.....

One of my favorite people in this world is a highly educated, very kind, devout athesist (a born Jew). Many who don't believe are great people, but I've noticed that many of them were raised Christian. They were impacted by God's teachings in a positive way before using their free will to choose not to believe. I'm sure, too, there are wonderful atheists who were raised as atheists, too. The bottom line is we can be great human beings, but God expects us to believe and we will not reap the after rewards unless we believe (regardless of how nice...

That is so true!!!! Thanks for that! We had a lesson at church a few months ago, telling us that we all were given challenges in this life, and differences we have to overcome and we are not to judge those who have feelings towards the same gender. These are real feelings and very difficult to overcome. We are to be very sensitive towards them, because if this was given to us, what would we do????

I worked with two different well-educated women (at different locals) who were both in their 40's and gay (with partners). They attended church every Sunday (both Baptist). I asked each how they could attend with their knowledge of God's (and the church's) stand on homosexuality. They shocked me (not only by their attendance); both asked me to pray for them. They said they are sinners who choose to sin in the name of love (of the females in their lives). They loved God, and hoped he would forgive them. THEY are true Christians...they have failings, but we all do in one way or another, but their faith in God remained unbroken. I was (am) so impressed, and I hope/pray God finds a place for these special women in Heaven when it's their time.
We, as Christians, are supposed to have more compassion for those who carry larger crosses than we...homosexuals; handicapped; drug-addicted; etc. That's why we are to judge behaviors, not people.

We must not fall into thinking because we are Christians that we are better than others. My dad was not a Christian and was a better person than I am. One of my brothers does not have any faith and is a really sweet person, who often acts better than I do.

Thanks for sharing that. I know one thing, is that God's plan is merciful and beautiful! When we understand how much he loves his children, we can surely imagine that he has a plan for us to go back to him, back home. When we judge others, we offend HIM so much. I realize this more and more. I have children and I could not bear if anyone said anything unkind about them no matter what their struggles. I would want people to be kind to them and love them. That makes me realize how God feels about us all.

He does love us all, but he is not policially correct and we, as Christians, are not supposed to care what is popular in the secular world. He loves all humans, but he does not condone actions he deems sinful, such as homosexual sex. Being a homosexual (for example) is not sinful. Him/her engaging in gay sex is. NOT a popular opinion, but as Christians we aren't supposed to pick just the easy teachings to adhere to. We also have to extend our hearts to those who carry those heavy crosses, for it is not easy for (example) a homosexual...

I am so glad God is my judge at the end of this life, because no one can be so merciful, loving and understanding as he is!

I too once heard at church that there are people who are more tried than some of us. I believe that to be true. As you said above, some have larger crosses to bear. I once was asked to visit a lady who suffered with drug addiction for years. When I sat with her and she told me the things she had gone through in her life, and the reason why she depended so much on drugs, I felt small! I felt like my trials were nothing compared to her. There is always somoene who has it worse than we do. Once we realize that we are able to have more compassion. I thought I had the worst childhood of any kid until I began working with rape and abuse victims (women and children). My eyes opened wide. God gives us many blessings, but unfortunately they are often overshadowed by the negatives in our lives. Whenever I feel my life is in the toilet I think of some of the people I've met throughout life who had been raped; or had no home; or were drug-addicted; or who lost custody...

I don't think that it has to mean "convert or burn" or be about satanists, but it can be about people who are vain and shallow and not concerned with the bigger issues in life. All they care about is power and money and other wordly things, so they are essentially "selling their souls", and the final question means that when you are dying will you really care about all your money and wealth? It won't save you, nothing will, you will die.
Black Sabbath is my favorite band. I vote this as Terry Butler's best bass Riff.
Interesting that a fellow believer would be judgemental towards others that share different beliefs.
That aside, magicalweasal is right, the message is "don't wait till you die to repent and ask for God's mercy." This will make your deal a lot more painful and frightening when it can be a pleasant pseudo-masochistic (painfully enjoyable) experience.
I think they wrote this song to prove a point like: you do all this evil (i the eyes of the church) and you act like satan wants you to, but at the end you'll probably coward of all you did wrong and repent youself to god, BUT it doens't mean the band chooses the side of god or satan (why battle about that?)... it is just to prove a point, a story, and it is very well written.
