i'm sure this one's about their first album. Hence the "Great Divide" reference. He poured his heart into writing and recording those songs, they went out to California to record, and when they had gone through all the promotion and everything, they were left pretty much exactly where they had started out.
I think you're right, bubblesmn3. Reinforced by "twelve little pieces" - twelve being the number of tracks on Great Divide. A great song.
This song is great.... but i think when he says "California I thought i should see" and "Now I'm back home, yeah With twelve little pieces of me" he means he though he should go there, but ended up broken and found that home is where he really belongs
