So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Here the lights fall just as hard
A bit softer in the stall
It's not really wrong
It's not really right
I'm wide awake
She's upfront, upshot
Upstart up in every case
The kind of girl that whispers
Thank god for you
Oh yeah, all you got/need is me
Her confusion is in
The night that I stumbled
It's in the morning
That I that I struggled
Because I start to forget
But she will always remember
The kind of girl who laughs and says
Get up off your knees
Oh yeah, all you need/want is me
So you come and so you go
Tell me how hard how fast
Baby, tell me how high I must go
Tell me what you want
And tell me what you need
Tell me how hard, how fast, baby
How high I must go
Oh yeah, well all you need is me
This is the time of my life
A bit softer in the stall
It's not really wrong
It's not really right
I'm wide awake
She's upfront, upshot
Upstart up in every case
The kind of girl that whispers
Thank god for you
Oh yeah, all you got/need is me
Her confusion is in
The night that I stumbled
It's in the morning
That I that I struggled
Because I start to forget
But she will always remember
The kind of girl who laughs and says
Get up off your knees
Oh yeah, all you need/want is me
So you come and so you go
Tell me how hard how fast
Baby, tell me how high I must go
Tell me what you want
And tell me what you need
Tell me how hard, how fast, baby
How high I must go
Oh yeah, well all you need is me
This is the time of my life

l'ma prolly sing this song to my girlie when l see her cause, l'm sweet like that. l fully realized how cracked out l was when l babbled on earlier, but yeah l agree whole heartedly that yes its about lesbians, yes they were friends and the friendship transformed into something else
1- "it's not really wrong it's not really right" just how she percieves whats going on and how she feels about it? like, l always felt 1/2 like WOW I AM SO HAVING FUN AND SOOOOOO GOING TO BURN IN HELL BUT ITS BLOODY WELL WORTH IT
2-"her confusion is in the night that I stumbled it's in the morning that I that I struggled because I start to forget but she will always remember" SOOOOOOOOOO struck me as a time l did..stuff..drunk with a friend, and just waking up and thinking, ..what a night omg my head someone please turn off the sun... and l tried to block it out and be like noooo l'm straight l was just totally hammered but l secretly loved it and when l came to terms with it l was better for it
3- "this is the time of my life" - the heightened emotion makes you feel very alive and very like everythings new and like a total epiphany
