Dragonflies Lyrics

this is the first you spoke of it
in your black magic house
in a cold damp attic
two windows stare at us like eyes
behind them
december's dark
early morning sky
and a couple of
dead trees
with their ornamental stars
i thought by now that i
figured your head out
until now i thought i
figured your body out
so please help me to understand
because i love you
more than anyone
i wonder in what fields today
you're chasing dragonflies at play
my little lost girl
so far away

this is the first you spoke of it

I feel most of this album deals with romantic nostalgia. I believe this song is about a lover sharing a simple, intimate childhood memory of chasing dragonflies. The present day is dark and cold, so Mark is feeling nostalgic through her warm anecdote. She didn't think it was that important to share, but to Mark, it means a lot in the moment.. "This is the first you spoke of it"

The song appears to reference a haiku by the eighteenth-century Japanese poet Kaga no Chiyo on the death of her young son: 'tonbo-tori, kyo wa doko made itta yara' (which translates more or less as: 'chaser of dragonflies, to what distant place have you gone today?'). Here they have taken some poetic licence and changed it to a girl. I really like their rhymed version in these lyrics.
