Down Through Lyrics

I walked down the hill
sluggishly and frail
the wind blew hard
hard on me
I imagined it your ghost white body
making love with me
I walked down the hill
found you crying at the window sill
there lies the bridge
of our lost dreams
I want to see it once more before I leave
I still feel the sting in my hand
from when I hit you
I keep your picture
tidy and safe in a shrine
and hope that in time
we'll have a house on the shore
that showers my soul
washes away the violence that
runs in my blood
drains the pain that I caused you
down through

A very sad and beautiful song. He wants to be with her, but she left him because of the pain he caused her, including that he hit her, and he is full of regret and hopes she would get over that pain, and the violence inside him will be gone.

I love that the classic Kozelek-ness of the scentence: "We\'ll find a house on the shore that showers MY soul". So shamelessly selfish to only consider his own happiness in that way. He feels sorry for himself, constantly, and his fantasies are centered around him alone. Even the last scentence: "Drains the pain that I\'ve caused you, down through" is from a selfish perspective. He just wants to drain it out, and forget about it, instead of looking within for the reason and try to change, for her. He just recognizes the pain associated with the abuse and tries to numb it. Classic Mark, and very inspirational.
