Fish On (Fisherman Chronicles, Pt. 2) Lyrics

Felt a pang late one afternoon
I was fishin' off Muir beach
With Larry LaLonde
Grabbed a tuna salad sandwich
And I started to chew
Pretty soon Ler's yellin

Fish on. Fish on

I was just a little pup
And it was derby day
Was dad and me and Darrell
Out in San Pablo bay
Taco flavored Doritos
And my orange life vest
Dad caught a hundred pound sturgeon
On twenty-pound test
Now he fought that fish for an hour
And a half
Darrell'd say "Jump ya sons a bitch!"
And he grabbed for the gaff
When we got him in the boat
He measured six feet long
I was so danged impressed I had
To write a song called

Fish on

T'was a bright and sunny day
It was me and Todd Huth
Fishin' shark & Stingray
Out of Bohuas Lagoon

Well hey, hey, hey I'll be screwed,
Blued and tatooed
Looks like I got me one of them

Fish on. Fish on.

i'd just like to add that the music it's self is also about fishing.

The 1st part sounds like waking up at the crack of dawn, packing your gear and launching the boat, the 2nd part (where all the lyrics are) sounds like setting off in the river/ocean/lake then talking about past fishing trips whilst lazing in the morning sun waiting for a bite.

Then the music stops and you hear that tense moment where the fish bites ( bit of reel noise) then the hook is set and the fight is on! and it's a tug off war, with the tension on the line getting tighter and slacker (listen to the bass). then there's that messy moment where the fish is right neer boat and it's jumping about and could throw the hook. Finally it's netted and the inside of the boat is chaos till someone finds the club and gives the fish a good hard whack (Big thump on the bass) and there's a bit of silence where you admire the fish and perhaps feel a bit of remorse for it. Then it's back to waiting in the sun for another bite.

Musicly it's absolutely brilliant, though you have to be a fisherman to get it i spoze.

BTW: The Heckler's wrong about it being about one fishing trip, he's telling tales of several different trips. All clasic fishing tales too: there's the one where the fish bit as soon as you try to have some lunch, another one from childhood where you remember the big orange vest and the fish was MASIVE (atleast whe you were little it was), and finally the tale where you went out to target a specific big type of fish (sharks and stingrays) and to your amazement you got exactly what you were after.

Everyone who's grown up fishing has atleast one of each of these types of storeys

As with most (if not all) Primus songs there's a literal personal meanings (about places or people Les knows or knew). Look at Groundhog's Day for an exception where both personal element and metaphor are seperate).

Anyway I feel the song is definately about ambition, generally doing something you love and sticking at it no matter what as the perseverance will reap rewards (last verse). The plodding nature of this song conveys the need for patience, time may pass slow when waiting (e.g. for a fish, or to see if your band ever becomes famous)..

Yeah, I saw that interview with Les as well. He said it was a "true story," but I felt some sarcasm in his voice. This song basically takes me back to all my fishing experiences as a kid... Although I had not heard it until I was about 17 years old.

I feel like it's generally metaphor-free. It's basically just classic fisherman's tales put to music.

If you read the lyrics, its obvious that this song just tells a story about a fishing trip with Les, Ler (primus guitarist), Todd Huth (Sausage guitarist), Les' Dad, and a dude named Darrell. Badass bass solo and into with the fretless 6-string.

True story.

I believe this is called "Fisherman Chronicles pt. II" because it's a follow-up to John the Fisherman. In that case, of the three parts, this is my least favorite. I like it a lot, though... however, I wish "Those Damn Blue Collar Tweekers" would've been just before "Los Bastardos" and this would've been some other track. Just an opinion wth nothing to do with the meaning, though.

this songs about Les,Larry,Les's dad and a couple other people fishin in san pablo bay and his dad caught a 100 pound sturgen but it was really 18 pounds but 100 pounds fit into the song better

I remember watching a vid, Les said his dad caught the fish on 18 lb test, but 20 sounded better for the song. Sturgeon are regularly better than 5 feet, so 6 feet is a GOOD size for a sturgeon.
