Eleven Lyrics

I just can't seem to blend
Into society
I have no hope for this dim
Simplicity of law and order
By whose rules I see no rhyme in
the reason
I hold no hope for this holy treason
Of love and so soft
By whose standards
They tell me, they tell me
Who are they, who is they

Yes this song's timing is eleven, in a way. It's actually alternating measures of 6/4 and 5/4, or at least that's how it feels to me. I guess you could notate it as one big measure of 11/4. I think the lyrics are just there tacked on to make this song non instrumental; the focus of the song is the timing.

It's actually 11/8 time. This song is so obnoxious sounding when you play it alone on the bass... I love playing it.

Les is saying that society and its rules are bullshit and they are corrupt and make no sense at all. Herb is a badass.

I have been a drummer for 15 years and this song still blows my mind. I think Les is questioning why he needs to follow laws that are set by people with different standards, and that dont make any sense to him.

This song makes perfect sense.

Les choose to put this in 11 beats per measure (which i count as three 3/4 measures and a 2/4, just to keep correct time of course) because it is obsecure and very few, if any, musicians choose to attempt. The lyrics suggest that les is a sort of outcast that doesnt ever go along with what other people are doing.

put two and two together. why would you sing a song in common time about not fitting in? that would defeat the purpose of the song.

... It definitely has nothing to do with age. The song is called "Eleven" because there's eleven beats per measure. ZzZiff has it dead-on.

God bless Claypool for being able to write something this damn good in 11/8. I struggle writing in 5/4, forget 11/8.

I dont know where the hell I read that Eleven has its name cause Les uses a bass of 11 strings. But its true that this song is in 11/8

The whole concept of standards is bullshit, and a self-defeating paradox. Les clearly thinks this as so ;)
