Private Helicopter Lyrics

I'm on a private helicopter with my favorite ex-girlfriend
Tiny little cabin in the sky
Now we're alone and we can remember how we felt
Before we were angry
We were guilty
And we were bitter
(I must admit I said a few things, but...)

I'm still attracted to you
Sorry we've been so cold, so
Eight miles high and three hours to landing
God, your hair smells really great

I'm on a hovercraft to Paris
With my former best friend
We have to get to the cinematheque
We're not alone, but no one speaks English
So we're free
To look into each other's minds
And see what we're thinking like we always used to

I miss talking to you
But you never draw me out, so
Cast off the ego scars
Let's go hit the bars

I reserve the right to hold my grudges
Friends like you, you know the rest
But all told, I hold on to my anger far too long
Until it's a joke
The night is cold
The joke is old
(And poorly told, I told you once)

I'm on a private helicopter with my favorite ex-girlfriend
No one to keep up appearances for
Now we're alone and we can remember
How we felt at first
The desperate need to be together
Must've been good for something, sugar

I'm still attracted to you
No one's around to make us do what we're supposed to
So lie here in my arms
Lie here in my arms...

i just learned that this was harvey danger's second song that was supposed to be on the radio & mtv etc...i never heard it until i got the album about a year ago (they just broke up a month ago)...i think the fact that this song flopped and turned the band into more of a commercial failure and one-hit wonder shows that the average american doesn't know shit about songwriting, or rock and roll for that matter.

i hate to call harvey danger a one-hit wonder, but for what they were essentially, they have the best damn catalog to back it up.

i think it's mainly looking at the past. i can put myself and a friend and ... a couple of my exes in this song. i guess he's thinking about if he saw them again and they had a chance to catch up ... and they were in a private helicopter ...

I think it's about the honesty that finally comes out when you're alone with people you've had these kinds of relationships with. Because it's always on your mind, and when you run out of things to talk about...

this about how emotions make people do irrational things and ruin good things

YES. another of my favorite songs ever. i think it's pretty obvious what this makes me think about, though it also makes me think of former friends, failures, and letdowns in general.

"no one's around to make us do what we're supposed to, so lie here in my arms..."

great line..

So, I made some really vague comments in my time on here. :P

To update my thoughts on this song, I've always felt it's a clever way of describing what it's like to run into an ex, be it an ex friend or ex lover, and how it feels to be close to that person again(proximity wise or whatever). You find yourself second-guessing whatever led to the demise of your relationship. It's a wonderful way of explaining how it feels to be falling back under the spell of the good parts of the person you loved to begin with.

You just want to cast aside all of the problems you both ran into together and simply enjoy each other again. (hence the part about holding onto grudges for too long, etc)

It sums up the confusion of wanting someone in your life again who you thought you'd said goodbye to for good, and the kind of desire you feel to have the good parts of the relationship back. I just love the imagery of being in the tiny space of a helicopter cabin with someone, where they're pretty much trapped...and the glimmering hope of rekindling something is stark between them. Like listening to Pandora's box creak open.
Edited by delial on January 15 2008, at 06:37PM

i thought it was "no one's around to make us do what we're supposed to" whenever i hear this song, it makes me think that he's talking about dreams he had or is having. probably because the scenarios are so ridiculous. so i feel like it's about how in retrospect, everything seems so much better than it was at the time. you only remember the good parts.

i think that the setting mainly being a helicopter is saying that he'd like to be in a place where neither of them could run away. like they may have done before they broke up

You're all dancing around the meaning that I really feel encapsulates this song so perfectly.

To me, the singer desperately wants to make up for past slights.

"I miss talking to you But you never draw me out, so Cast off the ego scars Let's go hit the bars."

Here he's saying 'let's forget everything we said to each other, quite acting like stubborn fools, and go drinking like old times."

"I reserve the right to hold my grudges Friends like you, you know the rest But all told, I hold on to my anger far too long Until it's a joke The night is cold The joke is old"

I'm still mad, though I have no reason to be. At this point it's stubbornness and pride that's preventing me from apologizing to you for everything that happened.

"I'm still attracted to you No one's around to make us do what we're supposed to So lie here in my arms Lie here in my arms..."

This part is pretty obvious. He's still attracted to her, but he said a lot of things ("We were guilty, we were bitter, I must admit I said a few things") that, even though he wishes he could take back, still hang in the air like dirty laundry.

This song is about not letting petty and ancient feuds and grudges get in the way of the people who mean the most to you.
