I think the song is about a girl who's had some kind of nervous breakdown and lost all attachment to everything she once cared about in life, including her own loved ones and even society's norms (i.e. sitting naked outside). She wishes she could just abandon everything and leave for some new existence far off in space.
This song speaks so much of what I've been through in relationships. It is like a valentine to myself. So this is how I interpret the song... It's about a couple. An immature kind of selfish guy and a caring needy girl(AKA me). She tries to be the best she can be for the guy, but yet when he comes home each night, she's left without the love she needs. Everyday she tries to show how much she cares, like bringing him flowers, which also symbolize her innocence. Yet, he never cares enough to show her he cares too. She eventually has a sort of falling out with herself and sinks into a deep depression and low self esteem. The song refers to this in the part where she's looking up and looking dead. All the life is gone from her eyes. She's lost herself. She's been way too dependent on him, and he's failed her. Her being naked refers to her dark secrets finally being exposed. There's nothing left for her to hide. He finally sees how much he's hurt her and how terrible things have gotten. The yellow crumpled piece of paper i believe was a note she wrote telling him how he made her feel, but she got scared of hurting him so crumpled it up. I'm not sure about the sevens, nines, and tens. But I think there might be something significant about the number eight being skipped. I think her not waiting for him symbolizes her realizing she couldn't change him and giving up on the relationship. I believe her thinking she missed the train to mars refers to her feeling odd compared to other people, like she cares too much compared to others, and it leaves her feeling alien, like she doesn't belong. Her counting stars has two different meanings i think. One meaning is that she's looking up hoping someone out there might feel like she does. the other refers metaphorically to getting nowhere in the relationship. As in the stars are nearly endless. It's impossible to count them all, like it's impossible for her to get what she needs from the relationship. I love this song so much. I hope you all do too. <3
@bubblyanarchist77 Is "8" the only number that's not connected? There's no togetherness? Like, when you draw an "8" the circles overlap and connect in a single, endless stroke?

He took for granted that she'd always be there--she was so devoted at one time...loved him, adored him. Hung on his every word:
"I thought you'd be there holding daisies, you always wait for me."
He treated her carelessly so her love began to waver. She's begun to feel like she wasted all her time loving someone too selfish to truly love her back with all his heart and now she's "missed her train" because she spent all her youth and love on something that broke her. She's thinking about all the stuff she could have done and how time has passed her by.
The light has gone from her eyes. She doesn't care anymore:
"I found her out back sitting naked looking up and looking dead."
But the truth is, he misses her. She's still there with him, but her heart is cold and he realizes that she'll soon leave him. She's counting stars...waiting for her chance to take the next train.
have you ever just sat there looking no where, totally spaced out and very few people can reach you?
Honestly, when I first heard the song . . I thought sevens, nines, and tens was her committing suicide, but I've listen to it a lot more and think it's just her count of stars.

The whole song just sounds like young love to me, like a less than perfect relationship.

I think the girl in the song killed herself. so the yellow piece of paper was the suicide note. like she thinks she missed the train to mars, like she missed out on an opportunity, and shes counting stars, like shes thinking about what she missed out on. i thought she'd be there holding daisies, she always waits for me -he didnt suspect she was going to do it. and shes not at work shes not at school, he was looking for her, but he found her dead in the backyard or something.
i kinda thought the paper with numbers was her attempt at counting the stars
@bassace102 the paper with numbers 7 nines and 10s more than likely refers to an old magazine called Cosmopolitan where each month they had a questionnaire you could fill out about your relationship. Kind of like a multiple choice. The higher the number the more severely negative your relationship. I grew up during this era and know for sure I had a few of these filled out about me.

I think the paper thing is about numerology/ astrology; the fact that she was "sitting naked looking up and looking dead" to me implies that she's caught up in some kind of mysticism that signifies she's lost her grip on reality. Hence the guy's feeling that he's "finally broke[n] her," maybe with the mundanity of their life: "everything I want; nothing she needs" and she's no longer reliable in the domestic, homely ("daisies") way. Ah, but what do I know?
It isnt Daisy, It's DAISIES! HOLDING DAISIES. I doubt there is any reference to people/animals. More like she finally had enough abuse from the relationship. "everything I want, nothing that she needs". It's looks to though as he took her for granted and took more than he gave back to her. Seven Nines and Tens.... I have no clue what that stands for. Was there ever a music video for this song? I know it was played on the radio a couple years back. And I here now and then. If anyone knows please send me a message. I would really like to see it
yes :(S quite often, ussally when im some where i dont really know the people. its like theres loads of people but youve never felt more alone.
Did his girlfriend go off the deep end? Has she had a nervous breakdown that he could have seen coming but he was too self-absorbed? "i bring home everything i want, nothing that she needs"
And what exactly does a crumpled piece of paper with seven nines and tens mean?
I dig this song the most though, excellent guitars.
i dont get the seven nines and tens thing either :\
