Vanity Lyrics
you can hear the baby bones
crack beneath her wheels
tears of avalon
streak silent down her shield
high crimes and misdemeanors
unfortunate attacks
will leave you standing nameless
while she's turning black
vanity stands naked at my door
vanity cries, why?
eleanor, you've lost me
in a haze of wine and cocaine
gone out and cost me
everything i blame
broadcast in tv detail
to call their own stories
as i try to recapture
our best in former glories
vanity stands naked at my door
vanity cries, why?
vanity wants everything and more
vanity must die
she swears she'll turn around
turn around for good
she swears she'll turn around
turn around for sure
you know you'll run around
run around for her
you know you want to know so pure
ease on that dirt road
you've still a ways to go
soak in sights and city lights
while you still can borrow
cursed fall will find you
and bring a memory
the ghost of her surrender
with the kiss of anarchy
she's naked at my door
vanity cries, why?
vanity wants everything and more
vanity must die
die
crack beneath her wheels
tears of avalon
streak silent down her shield
high crimes and misdemeanors
unfortunate attacks
will leave you standing nameless
while she's turning black
vanity cries, why?
in a haze of wine and cocaine
gone out and cost me
everything i blame

our best in former glories

I really love this song. Like someone else already stated, its about a troubled girl who likes the drugs too much. Whenever I listen to this song I think of a druggie chick that looks in the mirror too much. This song sounds like old school Pumpkins. It would've been at home on Pisces.
To me the vocals on this track just seem to play the part of an additional instrument, somewhat obscured by the music. And personally I love that.
I think Vanity is an amazing song. Beautiful. Saying 'MACHINA/the machines of God' was a return to form is a complete lie. But I actually think Billy is sounding more like his earlier self with this song. To me it is Corgan's last really brilliant song; the Machina albums had their moments but overall the standard was quite average. And I think Zeitgeist proves he can't write stuff like this any more. For me this song is the real standout from Machina II. :)
this song makes me think of a couple.. the boys in love.. the girls a junkie.. it sounds like the boy is getting the courage to leave her because she loves the drugs more than him... hes giving her an ultimadum.. and she cant choose him. a loss of all respect for someone you loved is something that billy corgan knows how to write about.. fuck you (an ode to no one) is a good example.. so is XYU..
the above poster seems pretty right on this.
this is one of my favorite songs on Machina II
I agree with hesitating stars above. The girl is throwing her life to drugs, and (Billy) is being torn apart by it...not only is she ripping his heart out (because, at the moment at least, she holds his heart in her hand), but his life is spiraling downwards because of it.
And quite honestly, I have been with someone who did so many drugs and drank so much alcohol at parties that she would lose control over herself. It tore me apart because there was nothing I could do except agonize over her when I wasn't with her, and keep an eye over her (which sometimes involved fighting the other groping and horny males) when she started "partying". This song touches on that dark agony perfectly.
cursed fall will find you and bring a memory the ghost of her surrender with the kiss of anarchy
If you read postings on Billy Corgan's site, technically you would be correct. The name of the woman is not mentioned, but I believe this to be about Billy having a girl he knew come live with him when he learned she had become homeless. The relationship lasted little more than 6 weeks. eleanor, you've lost me in a haze of wine and cocaine gone out and cost me everything i blame broadcast in tv detail to call their own stories as i try to recapture our best in former glories
vanity cries, why?
He mentioned that she often got drunk and watched tv and she cried a lot. He felt sorry for her but could do little. He refferred to her as a ghost also. I think you guys nailed it dead on.
This song was much better than half the ones on Machina, so I don't know why it wasn't on there. Or even Judas O. One of my favourite pumpkin songs actually.
I think this song is about D'arcy and her increasing drug use in her final days in the band.
"eleanor, you've lost me in a haze of wine and cocaine gone out and cost me everything i blame broadcast in tv detail to call their own stories as i try to recapture our best in former glories "
BC was doing his best to keep the band together and "recapture our best in former glories" but she was spiraling downward with her addictions and "she swears she'll turn around, turn around for good"
I thought it was "you can hear the baby bones crack beneath her ribs tears all alone streak down her lids" at the beginning. Thought song was about abortion, promiscuousness, and drugs, things that contribute to or are caused by vanity.
