Corpus Christi Carol Lyrics
He bear her off, he bear her down
He bear her into an orchard ground
Lu li lu lay lu li lu lay
The falcon hath bourne my mate away
And in this orchard there was a hold
That was hanged with purple and gold
And in that hold there was a bed
And it was hanged with gold so red
Lu li lu lay lu li lu lay
The falcon hath bourne my mate away
And on this bed there lyeth a knight
His wound is bleeding day and night
By his bedside kneeleth a maid
And she weepeth both night and day
Lu li lu lay lu li lu lay
The falcon hath bourne my mate away
By his bedside standeth a stone
Corpus christi written thereon
He bear her into an orchard ground
The falcon hath bourne my mate away

And in that hold there was a bed

By his bedside kneeleth a maid
And she weepeth both night and day
The falcon hath bourne my mate away

Corpus Christi is a city near Galveston in Texas. It has a beach, and it's one of the few beaches in Texas. I live in Texas, that's why I know this. Every body here laughs sarcastically when we mention Corpis Christi, because it's a pretty pathetic, ugly beach, with green water, and trash dumped around every where, but it's all we've got that's the closest to a beach, so there you go.
And on this bed there lyeth a knight His wound is bleeding day and night By his bedside kneeleth a maid And she weepeth both night and day
Obviously, this is talking about Christ's body. Yes, we know Corpus Christi is also a city in Texas, but that's not what this is about. It's a religious parallel.
Oh also, from Jeff himself: "The "Carol" is a fairytale about a falcon who takes the beloved of the singer to an orchard. The singer goes looking for her and arrives at a chamber where his beloved lies next to a bleeding knight and a tomb with Christ's body in it. My friend Roy introduced me to the song when I was still in high-school and now I'm singing it for him."

corpus christi means "Christ's body" in latin
corpus christi is also a city in texas.
For christ's sake.. no one cares that a city in texas is called Corpus Christie! As 'sebastian guilt' mentioned, it is a very old song about Christ. A beautiful song, it is really overlooked by most people when discussing the amazing album, Grace
It's dedicated to Roy, a friend of his who got him into classical and operatic pieces
this song is an age old story of a woman, who is carried into an orchard and is taken to the body of christ. "opn this bed there lyeth a knight, his wounds are bleeding day and night
What else can I say but damn... I love this song. Beautiful in it's simplicities and intricacies.(sp?)
what does corpus christi actually mean?
