If in the morning you look up
Fake a smile and you sigh
Don’t fear the future
In the years to come you’ll learn
I used to sit and watch the pouring rain
I used to wish to be back home again
I hadn’t the strength then
I hadn’t the chance to reveal it
But it’s all in your hands
When do we begin?
Although you’re so sad
Discover things never had
It makes you wonder
A life alone you’ll learn
You’ll learn
When do we begin?
Fake a smile and you sigh
Don’t fear the future
In the years to come you’ll learn
I used to sit and watch the pouring rain
I used to wish to be back home again
I hadn’t the strength then
I hadn’t the chance to reveal it
But it’s all in your hands
When do we begin?
Although you’re so sad
Discover things never had
It makes you wonder
A life alone you’ll learn
You’ll learn
When do we begin?

this was my ex boyfriends favorite song ... it means soo much to me. i think its about a person who couldnt leave the past behind him, and it kept him from moving forward and being with people, and he's telling someone else to look forward or else you'll spend all your time alone. thats probably exactly what that other person said ... but oh well
To me, this song is comforting advice from someone who has been depressed and worried about where they were going in life, but they became strong. He's telling his Mona Lisa that once she begins changing her life, instead of living in the past, she'll be truly happy.
This is by far my favortie Guster some at the moment. Its so beautiful. "But its all in your hands, when do we begin?" I love it.
It sounds like the person suffer's from depression but is hiding it from everyone else. Maybe that's why it's called mona lisa, after all, the great mystery about the mona lisa is if she is smiling or not. It sounds like though, that someone is telling mona that he was in the same spot and soon she too will see that others know what she is going through and can help her. In the end, though, she'll only be happy if she accepts the help of others, escpecially those who know what she's been through.
Hmmm.. this song really hits me , i love it everyday more, is one of my favorite i agree with the first person is about not giving up and no taking things in your head , when they might be false.. in short terms is to think positive
Maybe this interpretation is a little literal, but I think that this song is about that point in life where you finally reach adulthood. Confusion and fear make you want to run back to your comfort zone and idolized memories but eventually you have to suck it up and get out there to control your own destiny.
great song to listen to when you're down. it reminds me that the best years of my life are still ahead of me.
i love this song. I have the a capella version by NYU's Mass Transit, the original song, and then a radiohead cover. This song is just beautiful, i could listen to it all day. About somebody whos depressed and realizes that if they want to be happy they have to do something about it instead of wallowing in their self pity.
I believe this songs tells the story of a regular guy who has become bored & frusterated with the complexity of life/living in society and at times, just sits and watches the pouring rain, thinking "what the hell am I going to do?" and just being extremely depressed and wanting to go back to simpler days of living with his family and not by himself, he wants to go home. Knowing he is above the mundaneness of everyday life though, he finds the strength within himself and says "fuck the past, fuck my depression, EVERYTHING is in MY hands right now, if I want to be happy and better my situation, I have to do something about it, not just fucking sob and watch the rain wishing for a miracle" And he does just that, and I hope becomes truly happy, but still watches the rain from time to time, thinking of how much it held him back and helped him at the same time.
One of the absolute best and most inspirational songs EVER created, they should play this on suicide hotlines as the waiting music, the suicide rate would be cut in half
