Habit

I see this as Eddie confronting the people that listen to and purchase Pearl Jam's albums just because Pearl Jam was incredibly popular. They were just doing it to fit in, to be like everyone else. It happens to every great band that becomes huge. But the key is not to lose your intergrity. Pearl Jam have remained one of the remaining true bands. Their music is art, pure and true, and they don't sell out for anything.

I think this has to do with heroin and not about drugs in general. Some members of the band are openly for legalization of marijuana.

You could take this song very generally and apply to any kind of habit, i.e. any mindless routine that someone goes through just because it's been imprinted in the animal part of his/her brain..Just any stupid thing that you do without thinking about, from biting your nails to booting H. "It's not your way" because you're just going through the motions & not actually thinking about what you're doing..you're like a slave to your own brain.

i dont think this song had what it takes to be a radio hit, its a great song though

i hate the radio and anyone who listens to just the radio on a regular basis doesnt really like the artists that they're listening to because all they hear is the hits, im a cd person, + theyre arent many good bands out anymore i stick to mostly pearl jam, neil young, zeppelin, and the who, nine inch nails in pretty good 2

I honestly think that habit was a song that PJ wrote just to have on No Code and say that they could still write music like they had in years past... that they could still rock out...... I have no clue why it wasnt a hit....I love this song

I disagree, Richie. The radio helps me find out about new bands or songs that I might like. I don't think this has much radio potential, though. I agree with you there. The coolest part is when he says, "Speaking as a child of the 90s...", and then the music starts blasting out of the stereo.

Anyways, I found out about Pearl Jam through the radio. I admit it, there was a time when I listened to rap and pop music. But my radio was broken and the only station that was playing was the rock station. I got into everything rock, and started realizing that rap and pop, well, suck. But, I got into PJ when hearing "Hail, Hail" on the radio. I thought they were really good, and I now own all of their albums.

Well, actually, I REALLY got into PJ when finding Vitalogy in a trash bin. The rest is history.

Well, rap does NOT suck. it's just like all other music. mainstream is crap (usually, there are some exception though) and you have to delve deeper to find the good stuff. there are a TON of great hip hop artists and groups who are amazing. well just wanted to get that out of the way.. lol

I haven't listened to the radio in two or three years except the classic rock station or the local rap station occassionally (i know this last part is kind of hypocritical, but I just say that ^^ truth up there for the people who can't stand the mainstream stuff... I, personally, enjoy dancin around acting stupid and yelling BOOTAYBOOTAYBOOTAYBOOTAY ROCKIT EVERY WHAYUH!!! it's fuckin hilarious and fun as hell.. haha) I don't think I've ever actually heard this song, I'm not like a huge pearl jam fan or anything but I own four of their albums. richie may i suggest checking out bands like dream theater, modest mouse, opeth, dredg, queensryche, mogwai, explosions in the sky, godspeed you black emperor, sonata arctica.. the list can go on and on but there's really bound to be something you'd like. just do a little research into things you'll find some new stuff you like.. none of it's gonna be played on the radio though I guess haha..

Yes, rap sucks. Think of how talentless you can be and still make millions. All you have to do is rhyme words into nonsensical crap about pimps, nice cars, big booties, etc.. And they do this behind a fake techno beat created by the studio. I'll listen to some Eminem stuff, like "Sing for the Moment" and "Lose Yourself" because the message is good and an actual guitar is used, but all that 50 Cent and Lil' John shit sends a bad message and ultimately, it just sucks!
