This song was debuted live before Kurt Cobain's death, so it wasn't originally about that. However, after Cobain died some of the lyrics were changed (eg "cigar box on the floor")
Immortality was debuted live on April 12,1994; about 7-8 days after Kurt died and 4 days after his body was found. Pearl Jam did start recording the song in March of '94 though, so it defiantly didn't start out as a tribute to Kurt Cobain.
