Space (I Believe In) Lyrics

We needed something to move and fill up the space
We needed something this always is just the case
Jefrey with one F, Jefrey took up his place
Sat on a carpet and with tablas in hand took up the chase

Jefrey with one F, Jefrey
Now it occurred to me as he drove away
D = R x T

Spacious
He's so spacious
Space
I believe in space

Jefrey with one F, Jefrey
Now I'm going to sing the 'Perry Mason theme'

He's so spacious
Spacious
He's so spacious
He's so spacious

Jefrey with one F, Jefrey
Jefrey with one F, Jefrey
Jefrey with one F, one F

taken from an interview with Black Francis:

"That's going to be called Space or Space I Believe In or something like that. There's a few songs that haven't been titled yet."

"He (Gil Norton) didn't like the words though, coz it was about this tablas player... you know tablas? Indian drums."

"We got this tablas player to play on the song. His name is Jef Feldman. He's the brother of a keyboard player that used to play with Captain Beefheart, who plays in Pere Ubu now - and he's played on our new record. His brother is an expert tablas player - he's jammed with Ravi Shankar and everything! "

Only a few bands in the world can have a song which is based mostly around the bizarre spelling of a name. Pixies are most deffinatly one of those bands.

Everybody in music has jammed with Ravi Shankar.

I have no idea how either could be inspired by the other (they came out too close to each other), but the...umm...chorus? lol of this song reminds me of a scene in the Twin Peaks movie, Fire Walk With Me...there's a bizarre scene with a character (played by David Bowie of all people) named Phillip Jeffries, who appears and disappears suddenly, recounting a bizarre series of events in between. The plural, as it were, of Jeffrey would be Jeffries, which has two F's, i.e. two F's would require two Jeffries. I'm crazy. But think about it, man...

@ROBRAM89 I thought about it for a long, good while and the answer = BOB

"now i'm going to sing the perry mason theme" that makes me laugh every time

The thing I always found odd was that d = r x t is in this song but not in the song Distance Equals Rate Times Time. Kind of like how Houses of the Holy wasn't on the album of that name, but on the next album.

The song is, as will said above, about the tablas player. If you listen carefully, you can hear the tablas in this song. And Francis probably threw in the d=r x t bit because of the song by that name (they were probably working on it around the same time). There a story all about this jefrey in the Fool the World oral history of the pixies book. READ IT!

@ahab3 a similar thing to how a bird dreams of Olympus Mons

weird song. kind of like a better brother to around the world on bossanova. saying that I prefer this one. the parts (which fb probably struggled with, which is why it sounds kinda forced) sound less forced than on round the world. beside the intro, chorus and outro rock. even if the rest doesn't. obviously the lyrics are throw away - "now i'm gonna sing the perry mason theme. la lalla lalla lala". lol.

it's ridiculous that no one has commented on this song yet. come on, i wanna know what this is about! it rocks out!

I don't think even Black knows what this is about. The lyrics make no sence at all.
