Trompe Le Monde Lyrics

Why do cupids and angels
continually haunt her dreams
like memories of another life
is painted on her shirt in capital
out on the free free way
there's only she an the they
represented by the lights
we went to the store and bought something great
which samples this song from washington state
go
go little record go
it is named by
some guy named joe
and the words
are the letters of the words
said
electrically played
for outer space and those of they who paid
this song is twice ocurred
and now its time to go
away on holiday.

Jimi Hendrix came from Washington state, had a hit with a song called "Hey Joe", an album called "Electric Ladyland" and is considered one of the best ever electric guitarists in history.

He also claimed to have been greatly influenced by sci-fi (hence "electrically played for outer space") and went away on a very loooong holiday, aged only 27 (just like Kurt Cobain).

So maybe the lyrics have more to do with poor departed Jimi than Nirvana, as a few people above have said.

And then the "memories of another life painted in capitals on her shirt" could be referring to the JIMI t-shirts we've likely all seen.

The song itself is very, very cryptic (beginning with the fact that they put a french title to it). I think it gains more sense when you take it as a part of the whole album, which is, overall, referred to change and travel. I believe that with this album Black Francis expressed his intention to leave the group and start a new phase in his life, even if he didn't consciously know it.

The song does not literally translate into "fool the world." For it in french to translate into "fool the world" it would have to be TrompER le Monde" Trompe le Monde, as it is exactly titled...actually translates into "Cheat the world."

great song. i love the cover by braid, another of my favorite bands. they inserted a hilarious spoken part in the middle of their cover. anyway, as for the meaning...i don't really know, it's near impossible to accurately interpret pixies lyrics. the title is french and i believe it translates to "deceive the world."

The spoken part in the middle of the braid version is off one of the tracks on the Pixies' album Surfer Rosa, "I'm Amazed." Braid just sorta transposed it into Trompe le Monde.

There is just something so perfect about the melody of this song. It may be my new favorite song.

my favorite pixies song. i think that "trompe le monde" is an art movement... you know, the one where they give paintings a 3D effect by painting a fake frame with something on it, like a bird or flower.

You're thinking of trompe l'oile, which is a style of painting; calling it a 'movement' might be going a bit far.

It seems to me to be predicting the rise of rap and the fall of actual music. The first part is describing some sort of vision, the two middle lines refer to the rise of sampling, and the last part explains that music is becoming an overly electronic bastardization of itself, where every song has "twice occurred" (sampling), everything is "electircally played," and the Pixies and good music in general are "going away on holiday."
