Up on the Roof Lyrics

Sometimes these fantasies come true,
and now the whole thing misses me.
Held down by fishing wire and glue,
to be the best we couldn't be.

Up on the roof with the whole world at our feet...
Is this everything you thought it'd be?
What you waited for religiously,
just know I wouldn't hate you if you tried.

Old times make heroes out of fools,
now the whole thing misses me.
Right at the breaking point you knew,
this is the best you'd never be.

You lied.
Decide
to fight. (??)
Try.
You might decide it's right.

Just know I wouldn't trade you for the world.
Is this everything you thought it'd be?
The best things in the industry,
just know I wouldn't hate you if you tried

I think this song is about a long crush someone had. The lyrics suggest to me that he eventually got together with this person that he really liked only to find it was not everything he thought it would be and that the crush was not all he thought. Although he does not understand why it didnt work out he still can't hate her.

I think it's kinda about a friend who is down and needs to "re-invent" himself/herself. It's like a message saying, "hey, it's okay, I still love you!"

~or something like that~

Does anyone else think this song is about losing virginity? It seems that way to me, but maybe I'm just making things up....

Edible, just because of the line," Is this everything you thought it'd be? What you waited for religiously" that does not mean this song is about that. Look at the rest of the song. I agree with brianta. In the first verse he basically is saying he wanted this so bad and it happened, and now he doesn't like it and he can't understand why this isn't what he wants anymore. They were basically barely hanging by a thread in their relationship and "held down by fishing line and glue to be the best we couldn't be". They saw amazing things in store for them, but neither of them had what it took to hold the relarionship together. In the chorus it's like "Ok, so here we are, we have everything we wanted...so do you really want this?"
"just know I wouldn't hate you if you tried"...they are both afraid to make the first move to jump out of this. He says not to be afraid to do it. 2nd verse: "Old times make heroes out of fools" They are both foolish now, but looking back at their friendship they can see that once they were perfect for each other. He doesn't understand how this happened...at the breaking point, it took so much to hang on and she fell short. She realized that what was required of her in order to save them was something she could not give. Good song.
