In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
No matter what you are
I will always be with you
Doesn't matter what you do girl, oh girl with you
No matter what you do
I will always be around
Won't you tell me what you found girl, oh girl won't you
Knock down the old grey wall, be a part of it all
Nothing to say, nothing to see, nothing to do
If you would give me all, as I would give it to you
Nothing would be, nothing would be, nothing would be
No matter where you go
There will always be a place
Can't you see in my face girl, oh girl don't you
Knock down the old grey wall, be a part of it all
Nothing to say, nothing to see, nothing to do
If you would give me all, as I would give it to you
Nothing would be, nothing would be, nothing would be
No matter what you are
I will always be with you
Doesn't matter what you do girl, oh girl with you
Oh girl, you girl, I want you
Oh girl, you girl, I want you
I will always be with you
Doesn't matter what you do girl, oh girl with you
No matter what you do
I will always be around

First comment on this song! Come on, people! This song kicks butt. Simple, loud, awesome!
Swansea's finest - what a band, what lyrics, what a story to this lot. True greats, much under-rated
I really get annoyed with how many people make every song on this site have some religious connectation. It's a love song about whichever two people you want it to be about.
If I really wanted, I could a put argument together about how this is a song about drugs sung by the drug itself.
Anyways, good tune, catchy, easy to like. I think the love meaning is fairly clear, but I listen to this and every so often I think it may be a guy telling a girl that she'll never get him off her mind, no matter what she does.
He encourages her to go out and try, but is confident that he'll always be with her inside.
@hotrod78monte That, and I hate that postings on most of these lyrics sites (like this one) are cut-and-paste from the same inaccurate lyrics. You see this not only on these lyrics sites, but also on tabs and chords sites. Does anyone do their own thinking and their own work?
great song about loving someone unconditionally. "No matter what" says it all. it's also a song of reassurance; no matter how many mistakes she makes or what she does he'll always love her and be around for her
@SK8LinZ94 Yep, just another "silly love song", if you'll pardon my use of that phrase.<br /> It's a great, simple song with a simple meaning.
some of the lyrics on this song don't make any sense.. but i love it. This was my ex and I's song.. it makes me so mad because i listen to this song now, and it reminds me of what a jackass he is. "No matter what you are, I will always be with you" yea.. my ex would say that line, what a bunch of BULL. but anyway. this is a really good song, catchy tune.;)
razajac is right, the line is "Knock down the old GREY wall"
razajac is right about the lyric, but the rest just shows how far a person can stretch something to fit it into their belief system."A love song from God" indeed.
This song is twice as good as any Beatles song ever released.
woah, can't believe the very few comments on badfinger. they were amazing!
Unconditional love? Maybe. I think this song is more about accepting that you do not own your partner and can not control all your partner's desires or actions. Even within the context of an intimate partnership, he or she is still an autonomous person and can't be kept on a leash. (Well, maybe a really long leash... we do have to establish some limits, right?)
Unfortunately, most people do not accept this reality, and disappointment is the inevitable result, which is why so many seemingly compatible people can't keep their relationships together.
