Johnny B. Lyrics

It's a sleepless night, she's calling your name,
It's a lonely ride, I know how you want her.
Again and again you're chasin' a dream, yeah,
But Johnny my friend, she's not what she seems.

Johnny B., how much there is to see,
Just open your eyes and listen to me.
Straight ahead, a green light turns to red,
Oh, why can't you see, oh, Johnny B.?

And when you drive her home, is she sittin' real close?
Does she make you weak? Well, that's the way that she wants you.
You're strung out again, she's taken you over,
You've been here before, why can't you let go?

Johnny B., how much there is to see,
Just open your eyes and listen to me.
Straight ahead, a green light turns to red,
Oh, why can't you see, oh, Johnny B.?

And when she calls your name, my sweet Johnny B.,
You can drive all night and you know she'll be waiting,
To love you again, her kiss is her poison,
Forever inside you, wherever you go.

Johnny B., how much there is to see,
Just open your eyes and listen to me.
Straight ahead, a green light turns to red,
Oh, why can't you see, oh, Johnny B.?

Johnny B., how much there is to see,
Just open your eyes and listen to me.
Straight ahead, a green light turns to red,
Oh, why can't you see, oh, Johnny B.?

Oh, can't you see, oh, Johnny B.?
Oh, can't you see?

I think this song, once again, is about drugs. I think it is heroin.

It's a sleepless night, she's calling your name, It's a lonely ride, I know how you want her. Again and again you're chasin' a dream, yeah, But Johnny my friend, she's not what she seems.

He cant sleep, he needs drugs and he is going to get it. He´s lonely, cos drug users dont have real friends, again again using drugs, getting high. But drug isnt as good as it feels.

And when you drive her home, is she sittin' real close? Does she make you weak? Well, that's the way that she wants you. You're strung out again, she's taken you over, You've been here before, why can't you let go?

Now he have bought drugs. Heroin makes you weak, it takes you over. Johnny knows that, but he cant stop using it.

And when she calls your name, my sweet Johnny B., You can drive all night and you know she'll be waiting, To love you again, her kiss is her poison, Forever inside you, wherever you go.

When you need heroin you do anything and spend all night getting it. Drugs are everywhere and finally he can buy it. Heroin is poison.

This song plainly describes addiction. It describes the relationship you have with the object of addiction. If you carefully read the lyrics it makes perfect sense.

I would extend the interpretation to addiction to drugs, people, things, behaviors, attitudes, habits, and ways of thinking that are fundamentally destructive, and that deny you the possibilities and chances of becoming a greater version of yourself. That is when and how "a green light turns to red" for someone. When he can't discipline and control his impulses and his addiction, so that it dominates and dictates his whole reality, and eventually his life.

I'll just move to the last verse. If you know the first thing about addiction, you know that even if you manage to control it, it is "forever inside you, wherever you go", and the only thing that can change, is your ability to resist it.

The person in question in this song could be his very young son. If the line went oh Johnny - why can't you see, he is in despair by trait he sees, or think he's seeing in his growing (infant) baby. The way he sings the verse would just add to the effect.
