Well, I would like to think
The world hasn't seen
That all the best is still to come,
And I know life ain't easy.

I pass them sleeping on the streets
Their bloodstained hands and dirty feet
And I can't ignore them
Any more then I already have

So we laugh, and we smile
And we play our games of sweet denial
But don't tell me we're forgiven
If we hold, all our breath
If we kneel right down and just repent
You can't tell me we're forgiven

Start with me
I cannot lie
When my heart doesn't follow my eyes
Turn away from all the suffering
That surrounds
Our time on this earth
For some their life has been a curse
I say I'm sorry and I should change
You know it just could be me someday

So we laugh, and we smile
And we play our games of sweet denial
But don't tell me we're forgiven
If we hold, all our breath
If we kneel right down and just repent
You can't tell me we're forgiven

There's no way out of here
I don't want to die, and leave it all behind
Each day part of me disappears
But who am I to judge, what's been sent from above

So we laugh, and we smile
And we play our games of sweet denial
But don't tell me we're forgiven
If we hold, all our breath
If we kneel right down and just repent
You can't tell me we're forgiven

We can't laugh
We can't smile
When so much just ain't right
It can't go on forever
If we hold, our breath
If we kneel down and repent
You can't tell me we're forgiven, no,
You can't tell me we're forgiven

I do, I think it's great. It's honest and truthful almost to a fault. I wonder about the things said in the song too, I'm glad i'm not the only one who thinks this way.

I like it too- It really makes me think...he's trying to tell us that we're pretending there's nothing wrong anywhere and yet if we say sorry we're automatically forgiven, it's not that easy though "If we kneel right down and just repent You can't tell me we're forgiven " His voice in this song is so strong and powerful it sends shivers down my spine

we pass by homeless people everyday. i'm at fault...i make fun of them sometimes without thinking twice about it. i'm a wasteful person, i takes 2 bites out of some thing and throw the rest away and not once do i think about starving children. so when i'm at a desperate time in my life, can i just hang my head down and ask God for forgiveness to make it go away????????? this song really makes me think and sometimes helps me become a better person, BEAUTIFUl song!

...what he says in the song its true, except "If we kneel right down and just repent You can't tell me we're forgiven "..he probably has a weird way of thinking about asking for forgiveness, or its just a way for him to show ppl that besides forgiveness there's alot more u have to do about the things he mentions in the rest of the song...

    I think that makes sense..

when it comes to the "If we kneel right down and just repent You can't tell me we're forgiven " part i think what he's saying is that he's almost asking God, "how can you forgive us for this?" Because he doesnt understand why God would still love us after all we've done to hurt one another

i dont know if this is the right interpretation or not seeing as that alex band was raised jewish, but i see this song as telling people ..mostly christians that as part of being fortunate and being forgiven is helping other people that arent as fortunate, and not just sitting back in our own little world and repenting for not doing the right thing.

I really really like the song and I agree with the others. The song tells us not to turn away. Bad things happen everywhere and everyday and it's not right that we can't change anything. The fact is we can but no one does it.

    Why?

I believe that this song has a spiritual significance to it. With so much poverty and distress in this world, our spoiled lifestyles often go without appreciation or effort to do what's right. When he says, "You can't tell me we're forgiven," it's like he knows that we ARE forgiven, but it seems so crazy and surreal that we can be loved that much no matter what we do. It's easy for us to think that we have it so bad or get caught up in our own situations, but the singer is taking a step back and looking at the big picture. He says, "I say I'm sorry, and I'll sure change, you know this just could me someday," and he's getting a reality-check by really putting things into perspective. The beginning with "I'd like to think...the best is still to come" reminds me that there is a heaven after earth and "But who am I to judge what is sent from above" means that although the circumstances of this world are confusing and many of us aren't doing anything about it, he can't give up or assume things when he knows that the higher being is in control and we cannot understand His ways down here as humans.

This song is so beautiful and well-done, I'm surprised it never gained the popularity it deserved.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
