Would Not Come Lyrics

if I make a lot of tinsel then people will want to
if I am hardened no fear of further abandonment
if I am famous then maybe i'll feel good in this skin
if I am cultured my words will somehow garner respect
i would throw a party still it would not come
i would bike run swim and still it would not come
i'd go traveling and still it would not come
I would starve myself and still it would not come
if I am masculine I will be taken more seriously
if I take a break it would make me irresponsible
if i'm elusive I will surely be sought after often
if I need assistance then I must be incapable
i'd be filthy rich and still
it would not come
I would seduce them and still
it would not come
I would drink vodka and still
it would not come
i'd have an orgasm and still
it wouldn't come
if I accumulate knowledge
i'll be impenetrable
if I am aloof no one will know
when they strike a nerve
if I keep my mouth shut the boat
will not have to be rocked
if I am vulnerable I will be
trampled upon
i would go shopping and still
it would not come
i'd leave the country and still
it would not come
i would scream and rebel still
it would not come
i would stuff my face and still
it would not come
i'd be productive and still it would not come
i'd be celebrated still it would not come
i'd the the hero and still it would not come
i'd renunciate and still it would not come

Would Not Come by Alanis Morrisette -- I loved this song the moment I heard it when it first came out because it rang true to/in my spirit. As I listened to it I asked throughout what "would not come" -- for her? When I put myself in her place (as the one singing the song) and what wasn't "coming" for me were three things: respect, satisfaction and enough... I think she can be talking about all of those things (and more) because true joy (not happiness because happiness is fleeting and over rated) -- true joy has to come from internalized respect (self love and acceptance), being satisfied (with self) and knowing when you've have/reached enough. I think we as the receivers of this song/message have to bring to or take from the song what resonates with our own inner spirits, paths and perspectives/perceptions as well as what we've denied our own spirits. For me the thing that screamed the loudest that would not come was respect.

I agree with Angry_Sar, i think it is about Happiness not coming

I Love the line "i'd have an orgasm and still it wouldn't come" I think this line shows even in the most amazing situations, happiness would not come!

7/10 - Its a great song but not one of my favourites!

Alanis feels that she is determined to not allow true happiness into her life, and nothing can change that.

i agree with angry_sar ithink its about happiness not comming, it like the lines "i would starve myself and still it would not come" and "I would stuff my face and still it would not come... its (i think) kinda about how she trys everything to be happy but she still cant find it.

To me it's about trying to get happy by looking outside yourself, as Alanis has often expressed that she has done in her past. But being famous, being "cultured" and all these things didn't help at all. She has tried appearing very masculine and independant, but it didn't make things easier for her, 'cause she still had a lot of issues..

I love this song!
