But Anyway Lyrics
I lied and told her I loved her
She didn't care, but anyway
I told her we'd still be friends
And she didn't care, but anyway
I tried last week for to call her
She wasn't home, but anyway
I think I'll spend my life alone
I really don't care right now, but anyway
It's a state of affairs and a state of emotions
The kind of thing that you must understand
I tell you one thing, you'll tell me another
We walk away, maybe even then shake hands
I'm quitting cigarette smoking
It's bad for me, but anyway
I don't think the T.V. was joking
When it told me this, but anyway
The newsman said not to sit on strange toilet seats
It's my life he's trying to save, but anyway
I found out that I got eye cancer
Too many television waves, but anyway
It's a state of affairs and a state of emotions
The kind of thing that you must understand
I tell you one thing, you'll tell me another
We walk away, maybe even then shake hands
Someday an answer will find us
Quite a long shot, but anyway
I think the past, the past is behind us
Be real confusing if not, but anyway
I put all my hope in tomorrow
It's gonna be great I can tell, but anyway
I see a new, a new day dawning
I like to sleep late, oh well, but anyway
It's a state of affairs and a state of emotions
The kind of thing that you must understand
I tell you one thing, you'll tell me another
We walk away, maybe even then shake hands
She didn't care, but anyway

I think this is about puttin stuff off like you don't care and then it builds up to piss you off. For me not caring is just hoping things will work themselves out. This song is about that hope.
This song is about the fact that something that can always go wrong from nothing. We quit cigarette smoking cuz we learn that it's harmful from TV. Hwever, we are bound to get eye cancer by watching too much TV. This song is extremely funny. I love the last line of John Popper's. " see a new day dawning. I like to sleep well, but anyway" - I know I'll have a better day tomorrow. But I don't know if I'll get up in time to enjoy it. Funny.......
this song, to me anyway, is like saying "oh well" all the time, especially when ironic things happen. "i quit smoking because i was watching tv and it said that it's bad for you. then i got cancer from watching tv. isn't that something? but anyway...

Yeah, it's just about when life gives you lemons being like, "it's just fruit" and moving on with your life. Whereas most people in similar situations would freak out and turn their life crazy crying and trying to put their life "back together" even though it's not that bad.
I love this song, it's so chill and even if you don't really feel like listening to the words it's still a good lift.
I always go the impression that the song was saying "Don't worry about anything, because chances are, things aren't what they appear to be." There's the whole TV trying to save me, but giving my cancer lines, and the obvious "I lied and told her I loved her" bit, but the chorus too, with "I tell you one thing, you tell me another" line too. There is no singular reality, so don't stress about the things that are part of yours.
But anyway, maybe I'm just reading too far into it.
@Boatkicker you Nailed it . The there is no singular reality sort of sums up the songs message and it’s a pretty amusing song

The almost silliness of the way life is today for us ..he sort of points out how silly reality is , a lot of the thought process behind things we say , believe , hear and act is ..not iron clad and not necessarily based on intelligent thought but anyway .. bc it ironically almost matters more what we believe things to mean
