Lily (My One and Only) Lyrics
Lily, my one and only
I can hardly wait till I see her
Silly, I know I'm silly
'Cause I'm hanging in this tree
In the hopes that she will catch a glimpse of me
And through her window shade
I watch her shadow move
I wonder if she...?
Lily, my one and only
Love is in my heart and in your eyes
Will she or won't she want him
No one knows for sure
But an officer is knocking at my door
And through her window shade
I watch her shadow move
I wonder if she could only see me?
And when I'm with her I feel fine
If I could kiss her I wouldn't mind the time it took to find
My lily, my one and only
I can hardly wait till I see her
Oh lily, I know you love me
'Cause as they're draggin' me away
I swear I saw her raise her hand and wave (goodbye)
I can hardly wait till I see her
Silly, I know I'm silly
'Cause I'm hanging in this tree
In the hopes that she will catch a glimpse of me
And through her window shade
I watch her shadow move
I wonder if she...?
Lily, my one and only
Love is in my heart and in your eyes
Will she or won't she want him
No one knows for sure
But an officer is knocking at my door
And through her window shade
I watch her shadow move
I wonder if she could only see me?
And when I'm with her I feel fine
If I could kiss her I wouldn't mind the time it took to find
My lily, my one and only
I can hardly wait till I see her
Oh lily, I know you love me
'Cause as they're draggin' me away
I swear I saw her raise her hand and wave (goodbye)

this song is actually pretty funny. it's about a peeping tom who gets caught by the girl he's spying on and him being arrested at the end of the song: "and as they're draggin me away" get it??
i could be very wrong here but i got a completely different meaning from this song. it came to me as a song about a boy who kills himself over a girl. lines like "hanging in this tree" and "officer is knocking at my door" (to tell the parents that their son is dead) and "dragging me away" (dragging his body away). This is all based on the line that says "will she or wont she want him", as in the boy having no chance with her no matter what the sitaution. This could all also be very wrong....

Yeah, you're 100% wrong. There is nothing in the lyrics to support this, whereas the lyrics basically say outright that the speaker's a peeping-tom stalker.

It's totally about stalking. Although maybe it's about some dude with a restraining order because the "When I'm with her I feel fine" bit which kind of implies he's been with her before. Anyway I like the cat theory. I like cats.
i dont think its entirely about a stalker but i think its about a boy whos completly in love with a girl beyond him and just try his best to get her notice him >>"cause i'm hanging in this tree in the hopes that she will catch a glimpse of me" peeping toms or stalkers prefer to be anonymous but the person describe isn't afraid of his love to be known so his intentions must pure not malicious. it kinda like a black humour
It reminds me of American Pie...

Haha I know this point has been made before, but I love how the music sounds innocent and gentle, when in reality it's about a creeper. I guess the song is that way because it's being told from the creeper's point of view, so it probably reflects his tender emotions.
I don't think this is exactly what the song is about (however, I'm not convinced it's about a stalker), but it's extremely relatable. I'm a teenager and me and a girl who happens to actually be named Lily love each other, however, due to personal circumstances we cannot date until were a few years older (she's a bit youngee than me). The officer in the song low-key reminds me of our friends saying it'll never work out, pulling us away from each other.
it's a great song. I never say it that way, starlight and slaphappy, I always thought it was a little more sinister... but the 'peeping tom' theory makes more sense eh. I love the name Lily. I want to call my daughter Lily... Great song. Great band. Great album... Pumkins kickass fullstop!
i think its about a peeping tom, and i know that billy has a pet named lilly, but i dont know if its a cat or a dog or what it is. But were would that fit into it
I can't help but think of the Snape and Lily relationship flashback in Harry Potter...the first time they meet as children Snape is hiding out and watching Lily and Petunia
Snape the peeping tom eh?

Goodness, I thought I was the only one who noticed the similarity! :D

This song came out in 1995 and the first Harry Potter book didn't come out until 1997.

Clearly, Lilly is a love interest! ....I think the song intentionally fools us into thinking that the relationship is real. When he says "I can hardly wait until I'm with her" it's how he's feeling, not something that is going to happen. When he says "love is in your eyes" feeling her love exactly how he wants it to be. It's all in his head. Lastly, when he says "and when I'm with her I feel fine" he feeling like she saves him just by being in his life. None of it is really happening. The hanging in the tree is slapstick. The writer is throwing us off the track of his sadness by disguising the unfortunate truth that they he is not as close to her as he would like to be. The unfortunate truth that he doesn't know if she even see's him. The terrible truth that he is having a fantasy that he doesn't really believe can ever be actualized. So why not put the sad truth in funny hat? I convenient disguise. It's by no means hiding the feelings they are clearly on display for us to feel them subconsciously as we puzzled by what it all means
didja know that if you subsitute "molly" for everytime he says "lily" it fits perfectly!? Has anyone else noticed that the smashing pumpkins say "one and only" in alot of thier songs? In "lily(my on and only", "By starlight", "Zero".........
Yeah I noticed that too. This might be a stretch, but when they say "one and only" in zero, he is referring his depression and how much he needs it. So maybe in "Lily" the song is about him "stalking" his depression because he wants it back so much? Then when the officer is "dragging him away" that represents someone saving him from his depression. IDK if anyone said that already, but I'm just throwing that out there that the whole album is all connected on an even deeper level than any of us can imagine....
