If you really read in it can be about so much depending on your interpetation, like is love a psudonym for sex, making it hedonistic? What is the desensitization due to? Drugs? TV? Religion? All of the above? Like any good artist U2 leaves it up to the audience to decide! A well written song!
Numb is definitely about drugs--mostly about the opioids--heroin, morphine, and synthetic painkillers. Especially with phrases like--me high--too much is not enough-- and "like smoking that dope" ( the EBN song). I used to nod out on Vicodin and Klonapin when listening to it.
I think that this is about the regulations and the don'ts that others force us to obey and make us feel numb because we don't have any freedom

not to sound stupid, but what does the song being 4 minutes 20 seconds long have to do with anything? anyway, one of my favorite 90's U2 song. The Edge does a great deadpan monotone. i agree with FelipeVox, probably about power in the media.
