Zooropa - Vorsprung durch Technik
Zooropa - be all that you can be
Be a winner - eat to get slimmer
Zooropa - a bluer kind of white
Zooropa - it could be yours tonight
We're mild and green and squeaky clean
Zooropa - better by design
Zooropa - fly the friendly skies
Through appliance of science
We've got that ring of confidence
And I have no compass
And I have no map
And I have no reasons
No reasons to get back
And I have no religion
And I don't know what's what
And I don't know the limit
The limit of what we've got
Don't worry baby - it'll be alright
You've got the right shoes
To get you through the night
It's cold outside, but brightly lit
Skip the subway - let's go to the overground
Get your head out of the mud baby
Put flowers in the mud baby
Overground
No particular place names
No particular song
I've been hiding
What am I hiding from?
Don't worry baby. It's gonna be alright
Uncertainty - can be a guiding light
I hear voices, ridiculous voices
I'm in the slipstream
Let's go, let's go - overground
Take your head out of the mud baby
She's gonna dream up the world she wants to live in
She's gonna dream out loud
She's gonna dream out loud
Zooropa - be all that you can be
Be a winner - eat to get slimmer
Zooropa - a bluer kind of white
Zooropa - it could be yours tonight
We're mild and green and squeaky clean
Zooropa - fly the friendly skies
Through appliance of science
We've got that ring of confidence
And I have no map
And I have no reasons
No reasons to get back
And I don't know what's what
And I don't know the limit
The limit of what we've got
You've got the right shoes
To get you through the night
It's cold outside, but brightly lit

Dear zatarregaza... Let me tell you what that "a bluer kind of white" means ;) Audi - "Vorsprung durch technik" The US Army - "Be all that you can be" The UK Lottery - "Be a winner" SlimFast - "Eat to get slimmer" Persil/Daz - "A bluer kind of white" United Airlines - "Fly the friendly skies" Fairy Liquid Mild Green - "We're mild and green, and squeeky clean" Toshiba - "Better by design" Colgate - "We've got that ring of confidence"
no, its not about that...its about marketing and commercialism and shit and how fake and stupid it all is...which includes pop culture which is what bono was being ironic about during zooropa and pop...
if you dont think so, just look at the credits for the song in the booklet at the last line
The "And I have no religion" line isn't supposed to be a statement. It is just saying that he is lost and God is lost amid the emptiness of the media/our commercialistic culture. There is a theme throughout the whole album of trying to find God in our oversaturated empty consumeralist culture.
Bono said he was influenced by sci-fi writer William Gibson while making this album, so the concept I described in the previous post may have some relation with this
is this "zooropa" about europe or am i wrong? seems like they travelled a lot to europe and it caused U2 to mix the sounds and turn their music into something really exotic, yet so urban and hypinotic... i love this song and this album!
Yes, it's about uncertainty about the future of Europe after the fall of communism and the invasion of consumerism into Eastern Europe.
thanks deathbear, you just saved me the trouble of explaining it...
No problem.
Also,
And I have no compass And I have no map And I have no reasons No reasons to get back
And I have no religion And I don't know what's what And I don't know the limit The limit of what we've got
Some of my favorite lyrics from U2. Bono's not saying he's atheist by "I have no religion", but he doesn't believe in organized religion very much (still extremely spiritual, though). Just a way of expressing spiritual freedom profoundly.
It sounds like Bono is saying that as a European they have no compass, maps, religion - no direction. Perhaps he's speaking en masse about the problems he (being European) has with Europe. Lacking in racial diversity he sees the blue seal of the European Union as the internationally recognised view of a racially white Europe - "a bluer kind of white".
An anti-commercialism song, also concerned with the European Union trying to point out the problems and negative consequences of a one-nation-continent like Europe has become ("no particular place names, no particular songs") Every European country is disappearing, leaving its place to Europe, so perhaps in the future there'll be no nations, just the continent Europe
