Sorry I Am Lyrics

i'm sorry i didn't sound more excited on the phone
i'm sorry that after all these years
i've left you feeling unrequited and alone, brought you to tears
i guess i never loved you quite as well as the way you loved me
i guess i'll never really be able to tell you how sorry
i am

and i don't know what it is about you
i just know it's not what it was
i don't know why red fades before blue it just does
and i don't know what it is about me
that i just can't keep still
i keep thinking someday i will make this all up to you
and maybe someday i will

i guess i never loved you quite as well
as the way you loved me
i guess i'll never really be able to tell you how sorry
i am
sorry i am
sorry i am
sorry i am

The beauty about the way Ani writes is that she leaves it open. She doesn't make gender the issue. The issue in the song is the love that she simply cannot return. I hate to see people dwindle her talent down to issues of sexuality. She is so much deeper than that.

four words: falling out of love.

Have you ever felt madly in love and that person didn't return the feelings as much as you thought/hoped? This is how they felt, unless they were heartless.

I love the line "i don't know why red fades before blue it just does" It says how the narrator doesn't know why she is falling out of love and why this whole thing is happening, but it is and she accepts that.

For me this song is quite unusual as when I'm listening to it feel more like it's being addressed to me rather than me addressing it to someone. Maybe this is just because of my experiences, I don't know - anyone else feel like this? At any rate it's interesting to see what it might be like on the other side of the story.

i feel the same way burningman.

but there's something that i find ambiguous.

"I guess I never loved you quite as well as the way you loved me" ---

does that mean she never loved him as much as he loved her? Or, that she didn't show her love for him as much as he did for her.

i thought at first, that it s was the former, but with the choice of words, plus the part that she meant to make it up to him, those made me think it was the latter.

(I think it is to a "her" not a "him" but none the less) it's a lovely song. I think they were lovers and then she (the girl Ani's singing to)died and it's expressing how guilty Ani(or the narrator)'s feeling about her lack of enthusiasm in the whole ordeal. and the narrator will never be able to tell her lover "how sorry [she is]" because the girl's dead.

i think that in writing this song, ani decided to write it from someone elses perspective to her. writers can easily see someone elses point of view with out its being biased or with the taintedness of their own feelings. its definitely a master piece and one of my favorites of her work.

this song is so precise with the feelings had by someone who has previously loved someone with all their heart, and yet for whatever the reason, has "fallen" out of love with them. for me, this song is perfect in conveying that while not diminishing the way i once felt and or the incredible hurt i feel now for losing it that love.

i think this song is about regret of a relationship that had potential and she fucked it up and maybe shes wishful thinking that if given the chance again she could make things up somehow.
