God's Country Lyrics

state trooper thinks i drive too fast
pulled me over to tell me so
i say out here on the prairie
any speed is too slow
i miss brooklyn i miss my crew
let's start over
i missed my cue
guess i just forgot
who i was talking to

i should have recognized
that fierce look in his eyes
i've seen it in the mirror
so many times
he's going to put his two cents in
'cause he's got a gun
but i'm gonna put in three
'cause history owes me one

guess i came out here to see some
stuff for myself
i mean, why leave the telling
up to everybody else
this may be god's country
but it's my country too
move over mr. holiness
and let the little people through

thank you for serving and protecting
the likes of me
thank you for the ticket
now can i leave?
you know i have left everywhere
i have ever been
i don't really recommend it
though not like anyone asked me
maybe you and i
will meet again someday
i've been known to
come down this road
call it destiny
and then again
maybe not
i don't know

It's not one of her deepest songs, but I think it's beautiful how she can take something so banal like getting a driving ticket and turn it into an artwork-- its one of the things that are so great about her.

thank you for serving and protecting the likes of me

makes me think of how cops are wasting their time on trivial things like speeding when something more important could be going on.. i don't know

i think that if you find this song to be meaning less then your looking to surfacly at it. if you think about some of hte thigns it says, like should have recognized that fierce look in his eyes i've seen it in the mirror so many times

its talking about the connections of emotions we never realize we have. also its being a stranger in a strange land, we never know where its going to take us asnd it all happend eventually, its about being out of context of yourself i think.

"he's going to put his two cents in 'cause he's got a gun but i'm gonna put in three 'cause history owes me one"

I love this stanza. So empowering.

I think this song has lots of hidden meaning to it. Agreed its upbeat and fun, but I think below the surface she is totally spitting in the face of authority. "he's going to put his two cents in 'cause he's got a gun but i'm gonna put in three 'cause history owes me one"....Ie: you might think Im small, or not entitled, but Im telling you I am!.. she uses alot of sarcasm here. Its great!

this is is incredible! "this is God's country, but this is my country too. Move over Mr. Holiness and let the little people through." and "he's gonna put his two cents in, cause he has a gun. but i'll put in three cause history owes me one." that's a cool ass play on words to say the least, but both of these lines show her ability to stand up to authority and show them fairness. i think. i could be wrong. Ani has too many lessons and meanings in her song to be summed up in one paragraph. ha she's one of the most amazing women who has ever entered my ears. :)
