Talk to Me Now Lyrics

He said, "Ani, oh, you've gotten tough"
'Cause my tone was curt.
Yeah and when I'm approached in a dark alley I don't lift my skirt.
In this city, self-preservation is a full time occupation.
I'm determined to survive on this shore.
You know I don't avert my eyes anymore.
In a man's world I am a woman by birth.
And after nineteen times around I have found they will stop at nothing once they know what you are worth.
Talk to me now.
I've played the powerless in too many dark scenes,
And I was blessed with a birth and a death,
And I guess I just want some say in between.
Don't you understand? In the day to day or the face to face,
I have to act just as strong as I can just to preserve a place where I can be who I am.
Talk to me now, oh.
Oh well you still know how, you can talk to me now.
Oh will you still know how, you can talk to me now.
Oh will you still know how, you can talk to me now.
Oh will you, oh will you, oh...
He said "Ani, you've gotten tough" cos my tone was curt
And when I'm approached in a dark alley I don't lift my skirt.
In this city, self preservation is a full time occupation.
I'm determined to survive on this shore, you know I don't avert my eyes any more.
In a man's world I am a woman by birth and after nineteen times around I have found they will stop at nothing once they know what you are worth, talk to me now.

i think this song is about being a woman in a world that remains difficult for a woman. shes not a slut (she doesnt lift her skirt). shes tough because the world makes her so. "they will stop at nothing once they know what you are worth"... theyll beat you down until you start to beat yourself. bshes just trying to preserve her sense of self. this song is truly amazing.

This song makes me think that Ani may have been raped, or maybe threatened at some point of her life. Perhaps this song is about surviving that. Does anyone know? oh, and yeah...it's fantastically beautiful.

I think this song is about what we face out in the world as women, and she's explaining why the way she is.

If your tone is curt sometimes, if you wont "lift your skirt" for some guy, you get called "tough" (or unfeminine or whatever). Ani describes how she is the way she is because for a woman to survive, requires defence mechanisms. There are some references to how women's options are limited (she just wants "some say in between").

I echo the sentiments of masked sarah :)

i think that the "they will stop at nothing" part means that when a guy finds out how good a woman really is, he will stop at nothing to get her.

Very empowering song. Makes me proud to be a strong woman in a world that attempts to chew everyone up (regardless of gender, race, creed etc) and spit them out.
