You Do Something To Me

It's interesting how every one gets something different from this song, depending on one's circumstances. I understand how it may be a song about unrequited love. But for me, I see something much darker and more tragic in this song.

I am ending a relationship with someone who has BPD, borderline personality disorder. This song has touched me so deeply during this time.

"You do something wonderful, then chase it all away"- this is exactly BPD. Unlike other mental illnesses, these people have moments of clarity when they are genuinely nice people, but then they'll switch--and be mean and emotionally abusive. That's why I like in this song, "I'm waiting for the change". Yes! --waiting to catch that glimmer of normalcy...waiting for the good guy to re-appear.

It mixes one's emotions being on the receiving end of such emotional dysregulation. It makes you doubt yourself because they're loving and kind one moment, but later on so cruel and then back to nice, etc.. So which is the real person?

"A peace I'll never find" there is no peace, no real normal, healthy love("a love I'll never find") when in a relationship with a BPD.

Dancing through the fire (his rages and rants) just to catch a flame (the part of him that is the normal person)...sigh.

I cry buckets listening to this song. It's very cathartic. I don't understand how people play this song at their weddings! It is such a tragic song!

This song was given to me by someone else. He told me it was how he felt about me. It is about two people who are very drawn to eachother, see something in eachother that is special and unique that they cant find anywhere else. The other person makes them feel things no one else can. And they are addicted to eachother. But to be with eachother would be like playing with fire. And it would never work or happen, because it is forbidden. There are other people involved. Nothing has happened between them yet, beyong conversations and deep talks, and that desire kills them. But nothing ever will hapen. Ever.

Everybody has different opinions on this song and i think that is the beauty of it, you can choose your own. for me this song is about really liking somebody, well loving them, and you get moments where they can be so nice to you then another where they can be quite cruel the 'Treat em mean keep em keen' theory. 'You do something wonderful then chase it all away. Mixing my emotions, that throws me back again' basically somebody being so nice towards you making you feel really good, then next minute not paying attention anymore and since you like them that much you feel the need to grab their attention, keeping you interested.'Dancing through the fire, just to catch a flame' lets her play with his feelings, just so he can have that glimmer of how she really feels, its hard but worth it. like seriously who would play with fire if theres nothing there to be rewarded with? 'Im hoping to get close to a peace i cannot find' hes hoping to have her, peacefully leaving her hard to get deminer behind but thats not going to happen and finally 'You do something to me, something deep inside' self explanatory really from outside looking in why does he like her with this treatment? yet his loves so deep inside he kept himself holding on. I dont know how i got to this conclusion seen as I myself don't show how im feeling but ive been treated this way and still most probably love this person quite cute really

I ADORE this song. I never used to Like Paul Weller's solo stuff, I only used to like the Jam. But this song has just captivated me. I can't help but ( try) and sing along when I hear it!
