Easy Tonight

My ex-girlfriend used to love this song. I can remember hearing this song on repeat during the times I used to be a teenager and was preparing for my A/L examination. Fell in love with the raw emotions channelled by the singer through his highly emotional voice and the music was also spot on. I always wondered whether the song was all about a girl who committed suicide or was there something deeper than just that.

Here's my misinterpretation or interpretation of the song.

My initial thoughts were that the girl and the guy fell in love with each other and eventually their relationship fell apart due to mutual differences. Both of them tried to get along with their own lives, until either the girl committed suicide or got killed by someone. Due to these events, the guy blamed himself for not being able to sabe her life, got depressed and wanders aimlessly like a vagabond, without a proper source of income, hence not being able to afford 2 dimes to make a telephone call. He cannot get used to the fact that she's dead so, he still tries to call her in the middle of the night hoping that she's going to pickup the phone. When he fails to contact her, he then goes to where she used to live, an empty apartment building; probably everyone was evicted due to the dilapidated condition of the building, or he is also dead and cannot interact with the people living there and only can see stuff that he has associated with his memory while he was still alive.

The girl is described as sharp, a synonym for someone with a higher intelligence, successful or being witty. She is also described as dark, a synonym for either inherent selfishness or melancholia. I would like to go with the aspect of melancholia, because the singer sings that she was dark as the night, meaning she was massively depressed even at the times of their relationship and was melancholic in her behaviour. Their relationship was probably the only thing worthwhile she has had in her life to keep holding into dear life, but after the breakup she got depressed to a level that she decided to commit suicide.

Maybe the guy also decided to follow her footsteps because he cannot get rid of the feeling that he has to do something with her suicide and finally kills himself. His ghost is wandering the earth trying to find her but cannot, as per his own words, he cannot meet her in heaven and don't know how to find her and doesn't know what is going to happen to him in the afterlife, whether he is going to the hell because he committed suicide (as per religious beliefs) or condemned to wander the earth until he let go of the desire to be with her to ascend to his afterlife.

Either way, I have decided to become a singer songwriter at the age of 33, without any previous experience nor fundamental knowledge in music, because I overheard this song yesterday on TV and it brought back memories about the times that I used to be free of social obligations and my premature rockstar fantasies.
