The Prince (Diamond Head cover) Lyrics
GARAGE INC. (1998)
(Tatler, Harris)
Originally recorded by Diamond Head in 1980
Now I see his face, I see his smile
Such a lonely place, no golden smile
Eyes tell of morbid tales of his black heart
His deeds through ages past tell of his part
See his face, see his smile
Time to die
Angel from below, change my dreams
I want for glory's hour, for wealth's esteem
I wish to sell my soul, to be reborn
I wish for earthly riches, don't want no crown of thorns
See his face, see his smile
Time to die
I was born a fool, don't want to stay that way
Devil take my soul, with diamonds you repay
I don't care for heaven, so don't you look for me to cry
And I will burn in hell, from the day I die
See his face, see his smile
Time to die

Yeah, Metallica opens every show with this peice...it's great, but not found on any albums except the Justice Import and Garage Inc. Something tells me this song has a "religious" background, but I'm not sure!
what I really don't understand about metallica is why such an amazing band like them would go doing songs like this. Like if you read into this it should be obvious that they are talking about selling your soul to the devil for wealth
maybe cause its a kickass song with a kickass riff?

So what is your problem? That it's about them selling their soul to the devil or the song sucks? Because it sounds like you're angry their selling their souls to the devils "ooooh noooozzz!" If that kinda stuff offends you, then you shouldn't be listening to metallica, why don't you go listen to some wholesome christian rock like Jars of Clay or Demon Hunter.

yes i dont want to listen and i dont want anybody to listen. they r not serious about hell, which is a real physical place... after death there there can be only 2 option - Heaven/Hell

Gaurdian,
Gaurdian,
1 if your offended by this Faustian song, you're OBVIOUSLY going to be offended by lepar messiah, which is their original (not to mention a third of the songs on this album... i mean, small hours?), so why are you bothering with a metallica thread? 2 your faith that there is a hell has nothing to do with either fact nor this songs meaning. if you want other people to believe the same thing as you, make a valid logical argument for there being a hell to convince them, and by all means, do it somewhere more appropriate than...

3 those who are not convinced of faith based claims about hell sometimes find mythological stuff to be interesting. Faust (which this is a variation on the theme of) was interesting. i also listen to songs about icarus and Ra... it's interesting, please don't unload baggage on me for finding it so.
Eagle, man, listen to this song. That is why Metallica would cover a song like this, lyrics are secondary. Also, this is originally by Diamond Head.
This is a song about people who betray their moral/ethical/religious etc. beliefs for material possessions. Just because the song is in first person doesn't necessarily mean the song is about the person singing it. A also think Metallica covered this song because of it's kick ass instrumentals not because of the lyrics.
this song is basically about selling your soul to the Prince of Darkness, aka the Devil, to get rich quick.
wow
yeah I think its a preatty good song too, you should listen to the orignial if you havent already, though metallica does a great cover of it!
in which context u say its a pretty good song? because i feel its not gud one!

Niccolo Machiavelli wrote a Paper called "The Prince." In the writing it more or less says that a political ruler must surrender his morals and ethics in order to be a successful leader. So Whiplash was more or less right... just left that some detail
an interesting thought. i certainly didn't make that connection. i thought that they were just referring to the prince of darkness, but it certainly bears argument the other way.

I love that riff. The MetallicA cover is 1000 times better
This song was originally released as the B side to the single "One" from the Justice album. I still have it downstairs in a box somewhere.
