He feels cheated at having to suffer so terribly for a love so true, but he feels he did the right thing, betraying God for his one true love. Would you? True love is all he really has left in this cruel, hate filled world. Is it worth betraying the light? Is true love that powerful an emotion? See below.

Not exactly sure what to make of the beginning of this verse. But the end, even though most of these don't need explaining, i'm just giving it from Spawn's point. He doesn't regret betraying god, or selling his soul to see his true love, because it was worth it to him.

His soul finally released(i cannot be sure, i haven't gotten this far in the story) he begins to rise to heaven, only to be denied by God. He doesn't want a paradise, he doesn't want heaven, he just wants it to end for him. And he "washes his hands". See, in this story, Malbolgia(the devil) and god are very similiar in tactics, heaven claiming to be "Light", but resorting to the same measures as hell.

Whoa! This song hits the nail right on the head, dude! This song represents all of my own thoughts. From being about just wanting to die with no afterlife to wondering why God doesn't just let me die. I do admit that the song makes me sad, but I love it anyway! :)

One of the best iced earth songs ever made.. it is fueled by emotion. of course its about spawn, but i personally take this one to a higher level than that.. because i can relate to it myself.

This song ends the dark saga by having spawn decide he wants to have no alliance with God or the devil. Pretty powerful song I like the "my spirit begins to rise.... and i wash my hands of you" part the most

I agree with every single one of you. This is one of my favorite songs for two reasons: It is a song many can relate to on a higher level (schaffersmygod) and the female vocals sound absolutly perfect with Jon. A song that doesn't mix with depression. But yet another reason why Iced Earth is my favorite band.

It's a concept-album on Spawn (the comic-book hero) who literally can't die. Spawn ofcourse is just a retelling of the classic tale of Faust. A retelling closer to the roots appears in Kamelot's Epica+The Black Halo which might be easier to relate to because the guy isn't actually immortal with super-powers. Nevertheless, most songwriters urge the listeners to find their own meaning, and this song is VERY powerful and easy to relate with.

Powerful lyrics as the song fades out: "Why won't you let me die?" Amazing song, perfect way to close a superb album.

The song is very brilliant... and it just isn't about Spawn. It could relate to a lot of people... like some of you and myself. How you do things for love and betray God for the loss of it... yet you don't regret it... because the love was true...
