I think blackwater has definitely got it down. To me, the "I want to be much, then more" part represents not ever feeling like you're good enough, that no matter how hard you work, how hard you try, you always come up short of the prize, which, in this case, is a girl's affections. I kinda felt this first hand, back in high school, when I was damn near obsessed with this girl, but could never compete with her boyfriend, who pretty much outclassed me in every way. I think Chino had a similar experience, which he expresses quite poignantly in this song. Definitely my favorite Deftones song, one of my favorite songs ever. Period.

I’m super late on this as a new fan and also I was born wayyy after most of these comments😅 but I just wanna write down my thoughts that I’ve had abt this song forever. So basically my original idea came from when I was first listening to this song and never looked up the lyrics. It was like 2 changed lyrics that shaped my whole view of the song but I think it’s still relevant even tho the lyrics were a little off. Anyways my overall interpretation was it’s about a guy who is going crazy while he’s stalking a girl. So I used to think it’s said “no fist could fucking save you from..” (this is what the guy is saying to the girl, basically saying there’s no body or (no fist) who can protect her from him.) “youre not real” (this is basically just the guy telling the girl she’s not real to kind of like “justify” what he’s doing to her and just straight up gaslight her saying she’s “not real”. Also could be that he’s absolute batshit crazy and is losing his mind and is basically also horrified of her so he’s saying “you’re not real” to ground himself back down. I also think these 2 go hand in hand.) then in the end he’s just kind of reflecting on how he was before “everything felt good, everything was right at first” saying that everything was fine until he was so “curbed to know maddog” as in madness. Life before he was innocent and sweet “life before I would shine down unshy” and then it’s him saying “I want to be much then more, while I watch you” meaning he wants to be much to the girl and then maybe even more, while he watches (stalks) her. Again, also could mean he wants to be better but he obviously isn’t because he’s stalking her. This may be because he’s aware of what he’s doing and he knows it’s bad, he doesn’t want to be like this anymore but yet he can’t help it. He’s self aware of his shittiness. Anyways I really feel like this interpretation may still stand even with the lyrical errors at the start but maybe it’ll be switched up a bit I just like this story I made😭

The way the verse is so quiet and chilling. I'm listening to it right now and it's giving me goosebumps! I love it! Then from "Everything felt good" right to the end!! sigh. Chino's voice! sigh. The lulling guitar! sigh. The way it goes really quiet then explodes! sigh. I'm rambling now...

As far as the meaning goes..it seems to me like he's chasing after this girl who constantly puts him off "you knock me out". He feels like if he could do something for her, or be there for her at sometime he could win her over. Unfortunately he's got "no fist to save her from".

Awesome song, possibly the best song on Adrenaline, i love the ending...gives me goosebumps as well!

the only way to listen to this song is loud as f*ck! and you say goosebumps, every deftones song geves me goosebumps. its hard to pick a favorite.
