Shopa, this song is obviously dealing with the end of love. Crazy Love Vol. 1 would be some song dealing with how great a new love is. Vol 2 is dealing with the aftereffects.

Also, I doubt he'd want it to get confused with the Van Morrison song.

I really identify with this song!

I think it's probably related to PS going through a divorce. The protagonist is at a point in a break-up where he just wants things to be over with and to be out of the relationship. He and his wife are saying petty insults to each other ("She says the joke is on me/I say the joke is on her") and he's numb and just wants to get things over: Well, I have no opinion about that And I have no opinion about me

Even though the protagonist isn't a young, good-looking person anymore (he's "fat" now), the divorce will take up time (this will eat up a year of my life), and people will gossip about him ("All about the fire in your life/On the evening news"), that's better than his crazy relationship.

It's about his divorce from Carrie Fisher. I have read that Simon called it Vol. II to differentiate it from the Van Morrison song, but I do wonder if the fact that he'd already been married (and divorced) once before had something to do with it — he's already experienced "Vol. I".

A large theme of the song is the press reaction, especially the second verse ("It's all over the evening news"). I've come across a few caustic remarks Carrie Fisher made about their divorce in the press at the time ("She says she knows about jokes, this time the joke is on me"), whereas Paul Simon has a history of shunning the press and keeping his personal life very personal — I can't recall ever reading anything Paul Simon ever said in the press about the divorce ("Well, I have no opinion about that" — essentially, "no comment"). It's the same in the first verse with Fat Charlie the Archangel ("He said Well I don't claim to be happy about this, boys, and I don't seem to be happy about that") — the use of the words "claim" and "seem" are just so journalistic, it really comes across as a play on the way the press reports things that they don't have a reliable source on.

I've also read that Paul Simon claimed Fat Charlie the Archangel doesn't represent anyone, and but I think it's safe to deduce that Fat Charlie is pretty symbolic of Simon at that time.

This comment is based on what I've read on Paul Simon's biographies, which go into the backgrounds of some of his songs, with some of the details filled in by my own interpretation from what I know about Simon's life.

Calling someone Archangel isn't a random thing to say. When an Archangel says "I don't want no part of this crazy love" he is obviously not talking to someone of lesser rank. I think he would be talking to God. I think this lyric is a statement from people who hear that God is in control of everything and that God loves them, then they look around at the all the evil in the world and they say "I don't want no part of this crazy love". So, the Archangel files for divorce from God. Sometimes lyrics come from the artist's unconscious, so, Simon himself may have not been aware of this meaning of that lyric.

I'm not too sure what this song is about, but it's really ironic in some ways... for example, he's an archangel and he's getting a divorce, so how are the rest of us gonna cope?! Did PS ever get divorced? Could be interesting to find out, that would put alot of his songs into context...

Another obvious example of irony is the couplet "He says well this will eat up a year of my life/And then there's all that weight to be lost" - enough said :P

I love the line "Sad as a lonely little wrinkled balloon", it just makes you want to give 'Fat Charlie' a huge hug! It kinda annoys me in a way aswell because the song is so deep, as mentioned by Dead$y, and it's a funny line that takes the seriousness out of the song without really trying... awww, why are some people such good song writers?! Reckon he'd help me with my GCSE composition? Heeheehee...

Paul wrote this album while he was getting over his divorce from Carrie Fisher, so I'm sure that might have had some influence on this song.
