So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
You said you couldn't stay
You've seen it all before, I know
They sold you on their way
Oh, honey, that's okay
No harm, he's armed
Settin' off all your alarms
When I find out
I hope it's you who set this trap
And storefronts rarely change
At least I'm on my own again
Instead of anywhere with you
Oh, tell me it's all the same
And I lost my page again
I know this is so rare
But I'll try my luck with you
This life is on my side
Well, I am your one
Believe me, this is a chance, oh, oh
Let's see what is for sale
He's tryin' hard to give his job a chance
Oh, it's never gonna be
It's sad, but I agree
The signals don't seem right
They last for just one night, and then
I'm sorry that I said
That we were just good friends
No harm, he's armed
Setting off all your alarms
They're trapped, I can't
Be there in time, I'll think about that
And I lost my page again
I know this is so rare
But I'll try my luck with you
This life is on my side
Well, I am your one
Believe me, this is a chance, oh, oh
You've seen it all before, I know
They sold you on their way
Oh, honey, that's okay
No harm, he's armed
Settin' off all your alarms
When I find out
I hope it's you who set this trap
And storefronts rarely change

I think this song is about young love. The guy in the relationship doesn't know what love is, yet he feels so attached to the one he's with. What he doesn't realize is that he's contradicting himself and risking his dignity for her, hence: "And I've lost my page again I know this is so rare But I'll try my luck with you This life is on my side Well I am your one Believe me, this is a chance" His naivety will eventually lead to his ruin, but as cliche as it sounds, love will make things turn out for the better. I wanna make out with my girlfriend to this song.
